Like the title says, the 6800GT will include the programmable video encoder. The GT is definately looking to be the card to get

if this thing is fast enough at encoding it might take care of the last thing the p4 is better than amd at

Nah, probably one or more of the things but not the last thing.

There's still audio encoding and what not.

Would be even nicer if it was available and I had the cash...

Fair enough. My X800 Pro will be in on Monday to hold me over :p

Why wouldn't it be true? If it has the full 16 pipes, it would stand to reason everything else functions as well. I'm curious if its slower speed will limit its encoding functionality, though.

X-Bit

[MP3 Encoding, LAME 3.93,sec]
Pentium 4 3.2 GHz = 208 seconds
Athlon 64 3200 = 259 seconds

51 seconds shorter doesn't seem like a joke.

[Windows Media Encoder 9, MP2 to WME, sec]
Pentium 4 3.2 = 187 seconds
Athlon 64 3200 = 226 seconds

39 seconds shorter

I'm curious to see it function period. Any ideas when they're going to expose the PVP with the drivers?

Is there any reason at all to even consider buying a 6800 Ultra?

Unless the GT won't overclock at all (unlikely), I can't see why anyone would pay even $50 more for an Ultra, let alone $100 or more extra.

Of course some folks will, but I still don't get the tiny difference between the GT and the Ultra.

In the back of my mind I still suspect that the difference has to be greater, and that there has to be more incentive to pay extra for an Ultra. Something is just not adding up to me, but I guess we'll find out.

Unless NV is going to hold back the GT's for a while to get folks to buy Ultras?

Benchmarks says no(not for the price/performance) but who knows for sure until it hits retail.

What about a handful of CAD rendering apps??? what about multitasking that the hT does so well now versus the barton and A64 and likely will still do until AMD arrives with the dual core cpus.....

Go spout the AMD rhetoric elsewehere.....

I will surely bet the Nvidia will not deliver anything more then fast but not industry leading video encoding and since we have not seen it tested I think many of us know not to believe the rantings of a marketing wing of any product...Maybe you don't know that though....

Less than a minute difference = irrelevant for most people. Unless that's *all* you do, it's unlikely to justify the higher price of the P4. It's not like video encoding where you might be talking three versus four HOURS.

It's still faster in audio encoding nevertheless.

As said in above example it's around 20% more over the competition in audio encoding(which I don't call a joke). Now how much would you have to pay for a A64 solution with a increase in performance of 20%(if even available) in audio encoding over the A64 3200+(above).

source: AnandTech Price Guide
Athlon 64 3200 = $270 (Monarch)
Pentium 4 3.2 GHz = $278 (ZipZoomFly)

If $8 more is considered too high of a price premium over the competition for what you get from the performance in audio/video encoding, rendering & what not for what you need over the A64, then I don't see it.

And not everyone does video encoding either.

Last thing, 3 hours versus 4 hours is roughly 33% faster. What real world application in video encoding is 33% faster?
