hey guys, i was just wondering if the BFG Geforce 6800GT 256mb 128-bit oc'ed to 370mhz video card would work with my 300W system. when i went to the requirements, it said it needed a minimum of 300W, and i heard from a few ppl that buying the card would take a lot of power. any info would help, thanx. btw, heres my system setup:

- pentium4 3.0ghz ht
- 512mb pc3200
- 40gb hd
- dvd drive & cd-rw drive

thats all, thanx for the help

Maybe. That looks like it might be a Dell. If it is, then the 300W PSU rating is the average rating, not the max.

Well, then it'd probably be ok. I have a 350W one from Dell, and they claim that it can support pretty much anything except a 6800 Ultra OC (assuming you don't add a ridiculous number of drives of course). And like I said, with Dells, the PSU ratings are always the average, not the max like with regular PSUs, so you've got some room.

AFAIK Dell uses Fortron/Sparkle PSU's. If that is the case you shouldn't have any troubles at all.

The obviously the GF7s will work as well.

I heard that they draw the same or less power than the 6 series. Do you know if that's true? (He would need an AGP one though for a 4600.)

I think it would have to be one of the OEMs that sells PSUs with no power switch (I've never seen a Dell that had one on the PSU). So it could very well be Sparkle.

Edit: Actually now that you mention it, both Fortron and Sparkle sell switchless 300W PSUs...

You never know, they might decide to release AGP ones in the future (although at that point I wonder if your proc might start to be a bottleneck).

As a side note, I wonder if this is what you have:

Not that many PSUs are Dell compatible, and if you read through the comments, someone bought this for their Optiplex and it seems to fit and work fine. Looks like KoolDrew was right :).
