Would it be worth it to upgrade from a 6800GT to a 7800GS? I have an FX-55 processor. I'm debating about just waiting to get a new motherboard when AMD's next line of chips come out...But in the meantime, would the 7800GS give me a noticeable boost over my 6800GT? Thanks,

Ben

I dont think so, especially if your GT is overclocked. In some games there is a huge difference (Farcry with HDR) and some there is not much at all.

If you get a newmotherboard, you will need a new CPU (I think because of DDR2). If thats the case, your FX-55 will not be able to make the transfer. Personally, I wouldnt wait, and would sell your AGP board, and video card, and get a much faster PCIe video card, and PCIe mobo. Or better yet... sell your current mobo, cpu, and video card. If you wait to sell the FX-55 till the socket changes, you wont get near as much as you would now. Such is the case with the FX-51/53's. Dead socket, and people have to sell them cheap. You could come out with a nice dual core Opty, mobo, and much faster video card for the money you would get by selling your older stuff. The overall setup would be faster, even better if you overclocked the Opty.

QFT socket M2 will use ddr2 and a 940pin layout, and the performance boost from a 6800gt to a 7800gs is only marginal, POV 7800 AGP
The GeForce 7800 GS for the AGP platform is hitting a pretty sweet spot for me. It keeps up with the GeForce 6800 GT and even (not produced anymore) Ultra in most test.

your FX-55 will hold it's on for a long time coming, you could sell your AGP board and 6800gt, and move to a s939 PCIe board with a G70 or x1800/x1900 series GPU, and have a more noticeable boost in performance than the 7800gs.

One more vote for ditching the AGP board if you upgrade at all. Motherboards are cheap, the $307 or so the 7800GS goes for will almost cover the cost of a decent PCIe board and a 7800GT.

The comparisons of a factory overclocked 7600GS vs a stock clocked 6800GS show about a 10-20% difference depending on the game. That's not enough to step up an entire resolution, and overclocking a 6800GS/GT could cut the performance difference down to almost nothing.

Now, if some company uses the 7600GS PCB and puts a 7800GPU on it -- that'd be a whole different story.
