6800GT temp. up to 97 while playing games.

I'm just wondering what the normal temp range was for these cards. I just loaded battlefield 2 and after three minutes of playing, the game began to freeze about every 30 seconds for about 4 seconds at a time. I quit the game shortly after and checked my driver version (which was updated) but noticed that the temperature was at 97 and declining slowly...now (about 10 minutes later), it's staying pretty constant at around 83/84. Does it sound like my card is on the outs already?? Thanks for your help/advice in adance, guys :)

Do you mean 97C? If so, then yes that is way too hot. Check to see if the HSF is making proper contact with the core. If it seems loose, reseat it.

That's hotter than it's supposed to run. Could be the heatsink isn't making full contact with the core.

On both of them? It used to be a lot cooler too, until I switched motherboards... it might just be that the temperature sensor is way off though... I still see no issues, everything is super fast and such, no lockups no matter what.

Sorry... didn't mean to jump in your thread... my situation is different. You're locking up and I'm not, but I'm actually running hotter... very odd indeed...

Your idle temps stop way higher than mine too. Mine go down to 65 - 70C, and they rapidly decrease to that when I'm not playing a game...

ok, I'm glad you guys confirm it...makes me feel a little better. I'll check the HSF immediately. It's a BFG card so I'm protected under their nice warranty...just doesnt feel good to have a $400 card heat up enough to boil water.

Hmm, I'm not sure about the frying part. Why would it be set to throttle at 135C if it would fry at 100C? Is there even water to boil?

I do still think it's my sensors though... how can I fix that, or get a better idea of how hot they really are?

But then again it might not be just the sensors, the system ambient temperature goes way up too when those things are cooking, up to around 60C - 65C if I'm to believe the monitor. Oddly, the processor stays between 38C - 53C

I had the same problem with mine, a Leadtek a400gt. I don't quite remember the temps, but I definitely had the freezing. It happened in games and in benches. I reinstalled the heatsink, left the plastic shroud off and rigged a low speed 92mm panaflow on it. No more stuttering. Probably can't do that that to the BFG, but it's not a pretty sight anyway. Try reseating the heatsink, or get a different cooler and your problems should go away.

That is pretty hot, but I believe 125C is where they start throttling, at least according to Nvidia drivers.

Hmm, my eVGAs in the display properties (71.89) say 135C for mine.

Try getting a NV5 Silencer to cool ur GPU and use Artic Silver 5 as Thermal paste
this will help you get ur temprature down.

There are many models of NV5 dont know which exact model might suit ur GPU

Thanks for the replies, guys. I reseated the heat sink (the screws weren't QUITE as snug as they could be), but everything else seemed to be in perfect working order...odd indeed. I'm gonna do the half-life 2/battlefield 2 test. Fingers crossed.
