6800GT stock temperature? 121C?!

hey all. I gotta 6800gt for 1.5 years now. just did a fresh format of my comp a week ago and noticed the GPU core temp (not overclocked) was running at 81C with an ambient of 59C while just web browsing. Figured maybe the gfx card was dusty so i cleaned it out. After cleaning, the GPU core temp is stable at 72C and ambient temp went down to 43C while webbrowsing.

Clearly this is still too hot.

Heres the scary part, while i run CS, the 6800gt hits 121C past the core slowdown threshold. Ambient temp hits 60C.

I guess my question is, is there anything more that can be done on my end to fix this problem? Or, is it possible that there are some settings that are or other hardware problems that I can't see causing this kind of heat problems.

A little bit of history on this CPU, it is home built, stock cooling, I used to overclocked the card from 350/1.00ghz to 375/1.10ghz before i formated. Everything ran stable and cool before I formatted. My case is a Thermalake Tsunami Dream /w 3500+ Newcastle AMD. 6800GT by EVGA. Motherboard is a MSI Neo Plat 2. I am also running dual monitors at max resolution, a 17 inch generic LCD and a 20 inch dell widescreen.

This also might be a coincidence, but I also just recently swapped out 2 kingston 512 RAM for 2 1ghz corsair OCd RAM. I believe my gfx card was running fine before I did the switch.

i normally would not be alarmed by such things, except my counterstrike FPS got cut in half from 100 to 50. Probably because these cards are made to slow down performance if it heats up over 120C.

I don't think it's supposed to go over 90 even the X1900XTX doesn't go to 120 if the cooling is working

i replaced my stock hsf after awhile with the zalman vf700 and the temps dropped by 10C. are you sure the fan is still running full speed?

well, it is functioning at 120c. entire polygons are blacked out or look like TV static, but it is functioning. I also get a cute msg from the card saying "warning, your card is reducing its performance to keep your temperature under 120C." Not that this reduction in performance really helped the temp go down or the polygons to be shaded normally or anything.

I guess i'll get a Zalman and a Dual Core CPU. Might as well max out this machine's potential and then give it to the parents when I'm done. AGP and socket 939 is dead in a few months neways right?

Go for this one instead: http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Evercool/Turbo2

EDIT: I don't really understand why people recommend the VF-900 when there are other solutions that perform better and run quieter and are cheaper - namely, the Arctic Cooling X1/X2. I'm not sure how the VF-900 compares to the Turbo2 but you sure as hell can't beat $20 or less, and if the stock cooler has hitherto sufficed for the OP, then the Turbo2 surely performs well enough for his needs, and at half the price.

EDIT2: The Turbo2 is a 3-slot cooling solution IIRC. If you don't have enough space, look elsewhere.

EDIT3: Case-mod.com has the Arctic Cooling NV Silencer 5 for $20, and I don't know if the NVS5 performs better or worse than the Turbo2. I do know that Jab-tech sells the Thermalright V1 for $25 which performs significantly better than the NVS5 (around 9 degrees cooler at load in one review).

well. tbh, i wouldnt mind using this unfortunate turn of events to start pushing my overclocking skills. I stopped my previous overclocking of this card because the stock heatsink just wouldnt let the card run stable at any faster speeds. Guess i'll start researching GFX heatsinks. Any suggestions/debates are welcome.

I guess my last question would be, is there a chance that I did any permanent damage to my card that would not be resolved by installing an aftermarket heatsink? If so, I might as well just send this back to EVGA and get it replaced. During my initial testings with overclocking, I had put this card up to 405mhz/1.20GHZ until I found it to be unstable. This was over a year ago though and the card ran fine until at least 2 weeks ago. I ran the card at 375/1.10 for over a year without any issues.

My guess is no.

How much money do you want to spend on a new cooler?

i dont mind spending 50 bucks on a cooling solution if it will increase the power of the card substantially without making the whole computer sound like a helicopter. I'm pretty deaf, but I still have memories of the old 52x CD Roms that sounded like a vacuum cleaner.

I'm the type of guy who, when the 6800 ultra was the top card out, I bought the 6800GT. I have the same buying mentality with all computer components...

STOP.

Uninstall your drivers. Use Driver Cleaner. Install new drivers.

Check temps again.

EDIT: Sorry, boss walked in...

To be more clear, sometimes when you have driver issues with 6800 series cards your temps are reported incorrectly. Like you assumed, it clocks down to save itself from damage, even if the card isn't actually that hot.

To prove one way or the other, open your case up, and feel the back of your card. The 6800GT gets really hot, but you won't even be able to touch it if it's at 121c.

As far as which drivers, just try different ones than you loaded previously.
