As long as the supplies are low and demand is high they don't have to be competetive. They can charge as much as people are willing to pay for them.

Just got the same estimate via email for my outstanding order.
Looks like I may say screw-it and go with a 6600GT.

I do web-dev, some gaming, but not a ton.
I use an LCD with a native resolution of 1280x1024. I plan on playing HL2 and D3, and do some 3D rendering and possible video editing stuff, but I'm aggravated that these PCI-E cards aren't available. What's the point of having motherboards if you have no cards to go with it?

I'd like to run dual LCDs at some point, and the 6600GT's have dual-DVI, so I guess that'd fit the bill. Not sure what that'd do to performance, or how dual LCDs factor into gaming. Can you use both of them for a wider view? Would that kill my performance?

I havent dealt with them before, but honestly, you cant blame them for being backordered.
It is nvidia who sends them the cards...
