Hi, Im thinking about upgrading my old geforce3 to either a 6800GT or an X800XT but Im not sure which card to pick. They are roughly the same sort of price but which one is better?

My specs are:

Dell 8100 2.8GHZ
1.2GB RDRAM
330 Watt power supply

Would my power supply be a problem with either card??

Thanks

PS they are both made by MSI - is MSI a good brand?

I ran an overclocked Gainward 6800GT GS on a 300w generic Micro ATX power supply for over 1 and a half years with an overclocked A64 3200+

:) now i run a X800GTO @t 550/550 with a overclocked Dual core 3800+ no problemo on that same power supply.

PS: Both those cards wont run Unreal 3! Dont wast your money just get a cheap X800GTO or 6600GT they are more then fast enough! and you wont feel so bad about upgrading them come end of next year or mid next year even!

Welcome to the forums.

Overall, the X800XT will give you better performance.

If they are the same price, i would certainly grab the X800XT.

However, the X800XL is generally the best value in that price bracket.

You many want to check out the reviews on those cards on the main site here, Anandtech.com - Video section.

hi n7, thanks :)

I was leaning towards the X800XT, its only a little more than the 6800GT

Cheers

OpenGL: 6800GT
Direct3D: X800XT

aside from that, they perform very similarly with the main differences being that the 6800GT has HDR and PS3.0 support while the X800XT has lesser power usage and a simpler cooling solution.

Although, once you OC both to the max speed they can take they should be similar.

I would just get whatever is cheaper.

6800GT has a better more efficient implementation of HDR. = Less slow down when enabled

My X800GTO does HDR but i get a huge performance hit from it! :) Looks pretty though.

Mind you i run all my games at 1920x1200 .. HDR may not be so bad at lower rez.

Likely it's not far off, true.

The OP has AGP though (or i assuming so anyway), so PCI-e wouldn't work so well.

I vote for the 6800GS for $200. :)

Yeah, it's not available in AGP though...

How do you know that neither card will run the Unreal 3 Engine? I find it hard to believe that Epic or any gaming company would really release a game that would require people to go out and spend $300 on a new card in order to play the game with decent frame rates and resolution.

I'm going to bet that both of those cards would run UT 2007 at 1024 x 768 just fine. However the x800 might be hurt by its not having Shader 3.0. Maybe I'm wrong--but if I'm wrong--what's your evidence? I hope I'm not wrong because I'm probably not going to want to go out and shell out $300 for a new card to play UT 2007.

Both cards will run UE3 and that is a fact.

90% of all gamers still have sub 9600 level cards. Most cards out there are in fact Intel Extreme Graphics. After that, the next most would be FX5200s, Geforce 4MXs, Radeon 9000/9200, Radeon X300s, ect...

Most people would consider $150 for a video card to be the upper limit of price.

Why on Earth would a company release a game that could not run on hardware that is faster than 99% of the other hardware out there? Not one company has done this yet.

That is why games have graphical settings. You can turn the settings down or up to meet your system's capabilities.

Lets take AOE3 for an example. At maximum settings, it blows FEAR away. At minimal settings, it looks only a little better than AOE2.

I think stock for the 6800GT AGP has all but dried up, so the X800XT would be the best choice for <$300.

hey guys, i was a bit concerned that my 330watt power supply wouldnt be enought juice for the X800XT (ive heard i need at least 350watts) so ive decided to wait for the 6800GS AGP...does anyone know when its coming out?

thanks for your input

the wattage is good to have but doesnt decide,...the +12v rail decides if its less than 22a(20a bare minimum!),...ditch it

im not sure,..but i think in a week er so for the 6800GS AGP

My 6800GT ran fine in my old system with a 350 watt Antec PSU.. still I'd say go with 450/500 watt unit & make sure its high quality... a top quality 350 watt unit often puts out more actual power then a cheapo 550 watt.
Also if its ony going to be a week for the 6800GS, I'd say waiting is the way to go... supposedly they perform very close to a 6800GT & overclock higher.

I dont think the 6800gs AGP will be out any time soon...maybe a few weeks.

Personally, I'd take the 6800gt over an x800 because of shader model 3, but depending on your preference, you may or may not want it. If not, the x800 would be a better choice.

Also, for your PSU, i'd look into a 6600gt. They're widely available and still perform great. They're a good bit cheaper too. Or look for a 6800 AGP and try unlocking the pipes, and that would be a great card too.

About cards not running UE3, Epic even said that a 6600gt would run the engine FINE. Also, the videos at one conference (where they showed of that big city) were running in real time on a 6600gt, or so i've heard from multiple sources. It was running pretty good too, maybe not full settings at high resolutions, but it was running well.

So, a 6600gt or above would probably suit you fine for AGP, personally I'd go for whatever you can afford. My vote goes to the 6800gt because of performance and SM3...but I do worry about your PSU.

hi hans030390, i think you made up my mind for me =) ive just seen a Leadtek 6800GT AGP and i cant be bothered to wait for the GS.

the 6800GT needs a minimum 300watt doesnt it? I know BFG's do but im not sure about Leadtek.

PS I have a dell PSU and people tell me dell underate their power supplies, so im hoping all will be ok??

cheers

look at the label on the side and post what the ampage is for the +3v +5v and +12v rails(exmple:28a=+3.3v, 30a=+5v ,18a+12v)

that would be the deciding factor,...wattage makes you look at it,...ampage decides if you walk away from it or not,...if ampage is ignored, your asking for problems
