6800gt or x800 xt?

i can get the 6800gt for MSRP at $400, while i can get the x800 xt for $400 too, $100 below MSRP (from a friend). However, im a nvidia fanboy and im wondering which card i should use

i kno that the 6800gt can go to ultra speeds, but will it be as fast as the x800xt?
what should i get?

On average, the X800XT will be faster.

I'd go with it, unless you plan on playing Doom 3 only.

the x800xt will destroy the 6800gt except in doom3 (open gl) and doom3 game engine games that are coming out. Of course the x800xt will supposedly destroy all the nvidia's in Half Life 2 and games based upon Valve's engine so go figure. I would take the x800xt in a heartbeat at the same price as a 6800gt

destroys? for the most part they're pretty comparable if you can get ultra speeds or better on the GT. the xt is indeed faster overall, and i prefer the more compact, cooler running xt. I don't like the driver features as well, but my opinion could change with cat 4.10. you could also sell it on ebay and almost have enuff for 2 GTs 😉

of course, since you're admittedly an nv fanboy, take sm3 and go with the GT.

The XT is the better card but nVidia currently has the edge with drivers. Decide which is more important.

x800xt will be faster.
I think the 6800 Ultra will be the one to match X800XT

Well, see what is the price difference for the 6800 GT

Buy the XT, not happy with it? fleabay it for 600$+ and buy a GT and rest of the money to HDD, RAM or whatever 😀

Selling option is probably best. The GT can only compete with the XT in a handful of games in the benchmarks I have seen. Of course the comparison is invalid as they aren't competing products.

Personally I feel that this is a very obvious decision given that the 2 cards are the same price, unless you are absolutely a doom 3 diehard.

Well stated CaiNaM. COuldn't have said it better myself.

I would grab a GT because:
- I'm an nVidia fanboy,
- it has SM 3.0,
- it can o/c to Ultra speeds,
- differences between XT and GT may be in some cases significant on paper but are usually academic in real use,
- I want an nForce3 mobo and I don't want the Punkbuster freeze which is usually experienced by users with nVidia mobo/ATi video card combination,
- I'm an nVidia fanboy.

I was comparing the 2 cards myself, and after using ATI for a long time I have the BFG6800GT now. I like the card, but it is huuuge. It OCs past Ultra specs, so it is a nice price point for sure. Only other card I would have considered would be a softmoddable x800 VIVO.

If I were you, I'd follow the advice to use the XT and if you don't like it, sell it and buy a GT. Unless you're playing 1600x1200 with full eye candy you'll have acceptable framerates for pretty much anything.
