6800GT or X800 XL?

They seem to be basically the same price on newegg... $390 range.
Mobo is going to be DFI NF4 Ultra-D with a 3500+ winchester.
Any suggestions?

This is my first build so any other card recommendations would be good too. Also any ideas on which brands to stay away from?

I just noticed the 3500+ is about $70 less on ZipZoomFly than newegg. wow

if 800xl goes down at 300 i dont see any reason for buying the geforce.except they drop their price too.

even $320 for me considering that i prefer ATi over nVidia

and no, im NOT a fanboy

I know several people, myself included who have been having lots of problems with the 6800GT AGP cards. Don't know if the PCI Expresses are the same, but I'd be a little warry, haven't heard near as much bad stuff about the x8xx lines yet.

do u have enough power?.i have heard that these cards require a respectable amount of power to run well.quality power that is.

I would go with the X800 XL when the price drops to $300, hopefully next month. I've been waiting for this card since Anandtech's article about it in mid-December, but I might settle for the X800 ($200), if the price doesn't drop by the end of March.

It's a good reason to wait as I've learn't with my purchase of the AGP 6600 GT. It had compatibility problems with SIS chipsets. It's better to wait for retail brand comparison reviews and search for card problems on forums before buying the card.

''ATI will always be better than Nvidia. Go for the X800XL.''

if nvidia wasnt here today probably ati would do their best to rip our pockets.so i guess we owe them(nvidia) some respect.dont we?

Competition = good for consumer. Imagine if there were no AMD, we would most likely still be paying $1,000+ for a low end P4.

And not to ignore the OP, I say go with the X800XL if you are going to wait for it to reach MSRP and don't want SLI, but the GT if you expect to do so in the future and want to purchase now.

Im waiting for the x800xl to reach 300ish prices also. then Im building a rig practicaly the same as yours 😛 Main problem with going 6800gt PCI-e as they are ahrd to fine and also expensive 🙁

core speed means nothing except showing the superiority of nvidias architecture(less core speed same perfomance).its all a matter of value-perfomance.use common sense.

here are the two cards im looking at right now:

X800 XL
6800GT

The 6800GT's core speed is 350 Mhz while the X800 XL's is 400 Mhz. hmm

Top of the line Prescott = 3.8Ghz.
Top of the line AthlonFX = 2.6Ghz.
FX annihilates the Prescott in gaming.
Enough said.
