Im just about to buy a new video card and deciding which one to get. I have a DFI mobo and a AMD 64 3700. I dont mind paying a little extra for the Ultra but is it worth it? I also dont know what brand to get. It looks like BFG is good I hear good things.

GT, cheaper, nearly the same performance.

The few extra mhz on the ultra is nothing and the GT can oc to those speeds with ease.

Same some cash.

Good brands:

Leadtek and BFG are the best.

Bad brands:

XFX, and Pny.

well go for the 6800U only if u dont mind spending xtra otherwise the GT would be a much better option. BFG and EVGA are both great brands, u wont regret getting any one of them

The GT can usually be oc'd to ultra speeds, so I don't see any reason to spend extra money on the ultra.

Add the ASUS EN6800GT to the list of great 6800GT cards (make sure it's the blue card). Overclocks with ease using ASUS Smart Doctor and very quiet even with two cards running in SLI. Expensive but worth it.

I have the eVGA ultra and didn't regret spending the extra money. You can rive the Ultra to its limit with current games pretty easily, and somehow I just like the fatter PCB board with the two molex connectors.

for PCIe, X800XL is the sweet spot for performance right now.

On pricewatch today

x800xl pcie $273
6800gt pcie $366 (almost $100 more)
In this case I dont think 6800GT justified $100 more price increase for what it offers over x800xl.

Now 6800Ultra PCIe is $485 (insane price). This is plain ridiculous given this card is about 10 months old and MSRP of $499.

Given that new generation of cards are about to come out, putting down $400+ on a new videocard today is either a waste of money, or can be OK if you have money to waste. Think it over.

Start Review Here

NOTE: If you have DFI S754 mobo (ie. AGP), then like has been recommended a Leadtek $290 6800GT is the way to go.

I don't think that those brands are necessarily "bad", they just don't have the support/warranty that BFG, eVGA, Leadtek, etc have.

I'm very happy with my eVGA 6800GT. Faster than my x800xt PE in OpenGL, almost as good in Direct3D.
