I've been looking at upgrading my 9700pro since the new generation of cards came out. The 6800 series has caught my full attention. Would it be worth spending the extra $100+ for a 6800GT over the 6800NU? My system is an xp2800, 512MB pc2700, radeon9700pro (obviously). the monitor i use is only capable of 1280x1024 (SUN LCD 18.1").

So having said all that, would it be a much better buy if I got the NU or the GT? With doom3 and half-life 2 on the horizon, plenty more high-end games will follow.

I have almost the same system but for a slightly speedier processor. MY LCD resolution is 1280x1024 as well...
I"m leaning towards waiting for the 6800GT to come in stock somewhere because in addition to the faster speeds, it has the 4 extra pipes AND double the memory. If I could find a 6800NU for 250 or so on ther hand...

The GT has a big advantage over the NU in performance esspecilly at highier resolutions. I would think it is worth the extra 100 though it might also be worth it to wait it out and get in on a deal or something if your in no rush.

i was just looking at the benches anandtech did on doom3. i'm a huge ati fan, but not after that. i was going to buy an x800.

guess i'll look into the GT cards. you're right though JBT, i'll wait for prices to come down to at least MSRP from online stores. now it's just a matter of how long an impatient person like myself can hold out.

If you plan on doing some Doom3 and don't want to wait, maybe you should take the EVGA route. PUrchase the NU from Newegg for 290 or so and use their step up program in a few weeks or so when the madness ends.

doom3 runs fine on my 9700pro right now, but i want to play it in 1280 with no noticable slowdown. how does the step-up work exactly? how much do they give you for your card when you 'step-up'?
