6800GT OC Issues

Hi,
I just got my BFG GeForce6800GT OC and everything seemed fine..

Whenever I run any video-stressing game or program things will be running fine at high rates and then it will completely skip and stall out for a few seconds (Literally).

In CS:Source for example, I will be running at like 100fps and then after a few seconds it will skip out for 5 seconds.

AMD Athlon 64 3200+
1GB Corsair Ram
80GB WD SATA HD
BFG GeForce 6800GT OC
Lanparty UT Motherboard

EDIT: v71.84 Forceware
EDIT: Would updating my Motherboard drivers do anything? I'm still running stock on the Lanparty UT
EDIT: Btw, I ran a GeForce FX 5600 before and it didn't look as nice or run at as high of rates but it would NEVER skip hard like the new one.

ANY ideas?
I suppose I could return it? I have the box.

What temperature is your vid card under full load? You might also want to disable fast writes in the bios. And lastly, you can always format your computer.

It is idling at 80+ and I'm not sure exactly what its at under full load but I saw it at about 95+ (I haven't seen it go above 100 yet but I'm sure it would after gaming for a while).

I formatted my computer very recently, it is definitely not that. I'll disable fast write in my bios now... I tried disabling it in the nVidia options earlier but everytime i unchecked it and hit apply it would re-check it.. maybe since Its enabled in the bios??

My power supply is over 400w I believe.. what should it be?

I got the card slightly used, maybe its defective?
It came with the box, manuals, and everything other than the CD (So i still have the proof of purchase). Would I have any trouble getting a new one?

this is usually fast writes with 6800+nf3 chipset.. if disabling it doesnt work, use RivaTuner to disable it properly

Disable fast writes, and turn up your aperature setting in the BIOS to 256mb at least.

Those temps are VERY high, especially 80C idle.
The 71.84 have a known issue of showing high temps when the card is at stock speeds. Try overclocking your 2D and 3D settings to 400mhz/1000mhz (or use auto detect to find the optimal overclocks). Then report back with temperatures after that.

Also, CS:S runs pretty badly on Geforce 6 Series cards. My 6800GT OC also runs poorly, it will run 100+fps inside and then outside, for example in Office, it can drop to 30-40fps. It's Valves fault, and it can be fixed very easily. Some people will try to tell you it's your CPU, but I have an A64 and I'm not convinced that this is the case for me. I really hope Valve pulls things together and fixes the issues with the 6800 cards. Hell even the old Geforce 4 TI's run the game better, there's less stuttering and no unexpected framerate down spikes like the 6 series. It's just a driver/coding issue which can be fixed fairly easily.

My comp was on all night and I've been idling at 70.
This may sound stupid, but how do i Disable fastwrite in bios?

You're using 71.84 drivers right? I had the same problem when I switched to those. Now I've switched back to 67.02. These were "leaked" when HL2 came out and are supposed to have some optimizations for Source. They work great, with everything I've tried them with. No yellow water, no shiny grass... they just work.
