Noob here:

I'm having low FPS with a 6800 GT in CS:S. I have a Monitor from, no joke, 1995 that is 17". It cannot go over 1152x864. On some maps I get as low as 40 FPS. I tried turning off all eye candy and actually got lower FPS between 10-20 FPS.

I'm a little confused but it sounds like if I had a newer monitor, cranked my res up to 1600x1200, turned ALL the stuff way up (aniso and anti aliasing) I would get better FPS rates than I am now? On some levels I'm getting 40 FPS and lower. I talked to one guy with an x800 and he was getting 150+ FPS on the same map.

Thanks for your help I'm really confused. Maybe it's time to buy a newer monitor?

vsync is off. which suckx by the way cuz the refresh rate on my monitor is so low that image tearing is waaaaaaaaaaaaay noticeable

i just turned my aperature size down to 32mb in bios... the manual actually calls for 4mb but my bios doesn't go that low. however there seemed to be a 2 fold increase in FPS. I did the stress test in CS:S (I don't have any benchmarking software) and it went from 60+ to 112+ average fps... I wonder if that was the main problem. I'm going to go try a map.

strange, usually ppl set their aperature size to 256 or 512...

try a more "standard" resolution like 1024x768 too

I had it at bios max, 256... I dun know wtf is going on. That 32 seems to have helped though I haven't confirmed it.

Wait -- Nope!

I know! I know! 😀 The same thing happened to me. What you have to do is TURN ON VSYNC. This should help. If it doesn't, let us know.
