6800GT Constant 2-10 second stuttering in games at default clock

I've just built a new system:

MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
A64 3200+ (Winchester)
Galaxy 6800 GT
1Gb (2x512Mb) OCZ Platinum (not rev2)

I keep having problems in games where the action simply freezes for a few seconds then carries on. Very smooth performance otherwise. I'm trying to pinpoint the problem. I've found that running at lower resolutions either solves or decreases how often the freezes occur, and that underclocking the card stops it completely.

I'm using latest BIOS/Chipset/Vid drivers.

Any suggestions what could be the cause of this?

This may be unrelated but I also found that when trying to overclock I couldn't push my FSB more that 5Mhz over default without it becoming unstable. I know overclocking is never guraneteed but this seems an extremely low amount of headroom.

turn off fast writes in your bios. if that does not work, set agp aperture to 256mb as well. if that doesn't work, also use latest drivers from nvidia's site, if that does not work also try using the 65.73 drivers.
