For the 6800 GT do games like farcry automatically use 2xQ antialiasing when you set 2x or do you have to set that in the card settings?

I doubt it, as there should be at least three 2x settings: 2x, 2xS, and 2xQ.

2x is multisample--two full pixel samples.
2xS is supersample, where it takes 4 from the pixel centers as though it were 2x the resolution. IE, 800x600 2xS is like 1600x1200 that is then resized back into 800x600.
2xQ in Quincunx. First google hit

Supersampling also does the entire scene, and not just perticular edges.

-1 mipmap adjustment to the rescue!
Though with the 6800 doing multisample AA w/ a rotated grid, there's no good reason not to just use 2x. For GF3, GF4 and FX, Quincunx w/ a mipmap adjustment is good compromise if you can't stand jaggies. But the 6800's [MS]AA looks as good as ATI's.

Better yet run a higher resolution.
60Hz-70Hz refresh rates: bad.
Jaggies: bad.
AA: solution to both problems without selling my arm for a 6800U & 20"+ monitor.

Well yeah, I suppose it depends on your monitor.

There shouldn't be too much hit from 2xMSAA to 4xMSAA though...
