6800GS vs X850PRO

Which one would you guys recommend? It's for my friend's new computer. I got into a heated debate with another friend about these cards, so I thought I'd get yours guys's opinions about this. Thanks.

I'm assuming you're talking about AGP. I've been debating the two myself the past week. The 6800gs is more expensive at $220, it comes new with a warranty and an increased possibility at unlocking the 4 extra pipelines. The X850Pro, depending on what card you get, is potentially unlockable to X850XT speeds. Considering you can purchase the AGP X850Pro on ebay for anywhere from $170-$200 shipped, it seems like this would be a great deal assuming you can unlock it of course (on par with the Microcenter deal a couple weeks ago).

My vote goees to the X850Pro just because of it's raw potential in not-too-modern PC games out there (which is primarily what i'd be playing with it). However, in reality it'd be hard to pass up the high assurability of the 6800gs. Unless I find a really good deal on E-bay -- and can verify the Serial Number of the card as one of the known unlockable batches -- I'll probably just wait it out and see what this 7800GS does to the market in a few weeks.

For your situation, buying a card for a friend, i'd definatly go with the 6800GS if you had to buy it right now. It's more reliable in my opinion.
 
Compared to an X850Pro I'd take the 6800GS, but for close to the same money you should be able to get an X850XT which I'd choose over either one.
 
Well both cards are firstly 12 pipe cards. However the 6800GS can be unlocked to 16, and OCed to Ultra speeds or even more.
So i vote 6800GS, due to S.M 3.0, 6800 ultra performance, pure video and etc.

he's going pci-e nv42. all nv2 6800gs are 12 pipe only since there are only 12 pipes on the card itself. at stock botth are very close, x850 winning 3dmark05 and Half life 2, 6800gs winning doom3. overclocking is iffy because no noe knows if yuo willge a good oc or not, but I'd go 6800gs if it;s the same price just so i can get SM3 support. SM3 realy isnt a big deal at all, but eh, if it's free then i'll edge out SM2.

I agree with that. I do think that the 6800gs is known to OC fairly well...correct me if I'm mistaken.
 
I just bought an x850pro a couple weeks ago, upgrading from a 9800pro. I had been reading up about the possibility of unlocking the extra 4 pipes on the VIVO model and overclocking to XT PE speeds. After I got the card, I swapped out the stock HSF and put on a Zalman copper unit with some memory heatsinks and flashed the card to 16pipes and XT PE speeds.

Everything worked out and I still have a working video card! This was so easy to do, and I'm glad I went with the ATI. Temps are about 38C idle now and 53C under load which is a little less that what they were before I flashed the card with the stock HSF. Playing HL2 with all the goodies turned on, and loving it.

One word of warning though; this will only work on the VIVO version of this card made by ATI and limited other manufacturers. For more information, check out this forum for info on valid cards and performing the mod. http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?threadid=149491
