okay guys, I searched, but I don'ts ee people asking this question, so I would like to ask for you guys opinion.

Right now, the sapphire x800gto2 can be had at newegg at 189.99 and 169.99 AR. It comes with 16 pipeline out of the box.

The 6800gs is around the same price.

my question is, I've been researching, and I see comparison between the x800gto and the 6800gs, but never the gto2.

So, which card is the better bang for the buck? This is taking everything into account.

The GS only has 12, but the GTO2 has 16, but the GS has SM 3.0

Thanks guys

Performance wise X800GTO2 (16P) > 6800GS (12P)

SM 3.0 is nice but the GS is not a high-end card so that's not a big issue . . .

I would say go for the X800GTO2 if you want the faster card. If you must have HDR then go for the 6800GS . . .

HDR and SM3.0 with near performance of competing card, get the 6800GS, especially if you plan on keeping card for more than 6 months.

Well with the GS, HDR is probably too big of a hit. Unless you're content with say playing at 1024x768 . . . but I agree it's more future proof . . . (if indeed the OP decides to keep the card for a long period)

If you want sm3 get the gs. If you want more performance get the gto2.

like, what makes SM3 worth it of the 6800gs over the GT02?

Do u guys know of any link that has the frame rate diff between the two?

thanks

i assume that the sapphire x800gto with 16 pipes is similarly configured to the powercolor x800gto with 16 pipes (standard). the powercolor card is a defacto x800xl...almost identical specs (only a lot cheaper).
the x800 series of cards support hdr but not sm3.0. the difference between sm3.0 and sm2.0b (supported by x800 series) seems to be minimal, certainly at the moment. overall the 6800gs seems to be a better performer, but not by much. a lot depends on which games you play. opengl based games (doom 3, quake etc) go nvidia. splinter cell, half life etc go ati.
the powercolor card (not sure about sapphire) has dual-dvi, whereas none of the 6800gs cards feature this. so if having two lcd monitors running at optimal quality is important to you the 16 pipe gto may be the way to go.
here is a review which features direct comparisons between the powercolor 16 pipe x800gto and the 6800gs:

The sapphire gto2 is not the same core as the powercolor gto16. The gto16 uses the same core as the x800xl, which are known to be poor overclokers, and will rarely go above ~430mhz. The sapphire gto2 uses the same core as the x850xt, and will generally overclock to at least 500mhz, sometimes as high as 600mhz.

stock the 6800gs handily beats the GTO according to this review. however, unlocking pipes and overclocking may be able to make up the difference even if overclocking both. but that is a YMMV, as 6800gs while not being able to unlock pipes, are known to be good oc'ers.
I'd go with the 6800gs, only because i think sm3.0 will start to make a real difference soon. but it's hard to say both are great values right now.

Import an evertop 6800GS, those overclock like beast to like 500/1250 easily, eVGA 6800GS also overclock similarly.

The GTO2 is basically a R480 core (X850 XT) and usually overclocks close to those speeds. It will faster overall than a 6800GS. You can compare the X850 XT (basically an overclocked GTO2) to the 6800GS in several games at ? xbit

Actually people have been able to unlock the BFG 6800GS.

6800GS unlocked and OC gets around 5800 in 3Dmark05
X800GTO2 unlocked and OC gets around 6400

well other than the stress test, what about on net_graph 3

i plan on using 800x600 cuz i'm comfortable with that unless it looks super ****** on my new LCD

anyways, i just want my Source to run smooth ass hell :) thanks for feedback

hope the X800GTO2 will get the job done unless i can push for a X1800XL

what if I don't plan to OC?

Just plug it in and play.

Cuz OC's it will get rid of the warranty rite?
