6800GS or 7600GS AGP

Is there anything about the differences in feature set that would make the 7600gs worth getting over the 6800gs? I was looking at those two as well, and I wasn't sure if there might be something extra I was getting out of the 7 series, even if it wasn't pure FPS.

Link is to 6800XT which is a severely neutered version. 6800GS vs 7600GS seems to vary per game and the higher performer may be determined by o'erclockability.

As for features, the 7600 may hold up better with Transparency AA enabled and additionally offers Gamma Correct AA and should have lower power consumption. The original 6800 AGP (NV40) has a defective PVP in which case the 7600 (G73) or a 6800 PCIe (NV42) with HSI would differ in having a working PVP.

It's a stopgap. 7600gt is, what, $175, min? 40 dollars less can nab me a decent card, too. So long as the price-performance ratio is the same, I'm ok with that, seeing how I'll be doing a major upgrade next year. I think a good number of AGP users who shop midrange feel similarly.

For what it's worth, I'm more or less set on one of these:

It's the right price range for me, so it's just a matter of picking the one with the best price/performance ratio.

EDIT: I slimmed the list down to a fanless 7600gs, x850pro, and x800gto...should I throw an x800xt into the mix if I can find one?

Welp, since throwing X800 into the mix, one of those may offer the best bang for the dinar -especially a 16 pixel pipeline variant (default or unlockable). techpowerup or rage3d forums will prolly offer the best advice on specific models. I would certainly nix the 1650 and those 7600GS' with fans or 512MB; ergo, narrow it to the Gigabyte 7600GS and the X800's.

DasFox,

I'm in the exact same situation as you too. Personally, I'm leaning towards the 7600gs because the only "bad" thing i can say about it is that, although it has a newer gpu. its peripheral (memory etc) hardware seems to be holding it back. the other cards that i looked at were the 6800 series and x800gto. the 7600gs has better heat/cooling capabilities than the competition imho, which is more impt since i'm not a FPS/oblivion person.

What do you mean about the 6800XT being a severely neutered version?

the 6800XT is only barely faster than a 6600GT, and not even close to a 6800....come to think of it the 7600GS would probably perform a little bit faster(maybe 5%) than a 6800XT
