I was going to get the 6600gt 128mb from newegg today for $119. But a friend suggested that I look at the 6800gs 256mb for $219 instead. He says that I'll need at least the 6800gs to not choke on games for the next two years and that Vista will need a 256mb card. He says that the 6800gs will perform MUCH better than the gt. But the benchmarks that I see are for the pci-e version which runs at 425mhz core, while the agp runs at 350mhz. So is the performance difference still that much with the agp version?

The 6800GS is about the best you're going to do when it comes to a readily available AGP card from Nvidia. The 6800GT and Ultra are now quite rare and pricey. And just so you know, the 6800GT has a 350MHz GPU as well. The primary difference is that the GT has 16 pipelines, whereas the GS has 12.

A friend of mine just bought a 6800GS and has been very happy with it. The performance is basically identical to my 6800GT in most games.

It's a nice card.

I just installed my AGP BFG 6800 GS and successfully unlocked to 16/6!!! Been benchmarking and playing games like mad and have yet to see any artifacts. Unbelieveable value, if it unlocks, great value if it doesn't :)

3DMark03: 10720 (11912 with 16/6)
3DMark05: 4511 (5132 with 16/6)

Nice  Price went up almost $35 shipped since that deal newegg had on it the other day though, and it is OOS.
