For the most part, yes. I used to be able to run most games (excluding FEAR and newer stuff) at 1680x1050 on my old 6800GT. With no AA of course, and usually without much AF either (it was a big hit in FarCry at least). But it should be a nice upgrade from a 9800 Pro, yes.

The 6800GS AGP will be a good upgrade from the 9800pro(it's like an overclocked plain 6800, so it'll perform about right in between a 6800 and 6800GT), but I don't know about playing 1600*1200. What games are you wanting to play, exactly?

i want to play kotor 1 and 2 with AA and 1600x1200, quake 4 at 1600x1200, far cry at that...halo, doom 3, vampires: bloodline at that res....hopefully it'll future proof my aging pc a little bit for newer games..maybe even hoping to play oblivion at 1024x768 ?

It will definitly play oblivion at that resolution.

It's kinda different since it has GDDR3 memory and 128mb v-ram more, but if it unlocks that would be nice for the OP. I would consider going 7600gt pci-e? is that doable OP?

I don't know if quake 4 will run at that setting at 1600*1200, but the others will probably work at that settings, and oblivion MIGHT run at 1024*768 with medium settings provided you don't try to use shadows, as shadows as of now are the biggest frame rate killers in video games. I had a 7800GT and played fear at 1600*1200 4xAA and 8xAF and with any form of shadows on, it wasn't playable, but with shadows off(both the regular and soft shadows, I never used the soft shadows, shadows don't mean much to me anyway) and all other settings on, it'd run very smoothly.

I'm talking about an overclocked plain 6800 in terms of performance, because 700mhz is 700mhz(for example), no matter if it's DDR or GDDR3 or whatever, if I'm correct, and the 6800 or 6800GS probably don't have the power to use the extra 128mb of ram, if I'm correct on that as well. The 6800GS is still pretty good, though.

i was gonna get the 128mb version of the 6800gs but it was advertised as having a 128 bit bus, which put me off!...i think i am correct in this assumption? 256 bit bus makes a big difference (9800 SE has 128 bit bus and has shyt performance, wherea 9600 pro has 256 bus and is much faster)

Definitly, 256bit vs 128bit makes a huge difference in most cases.

Highly Likely

Hello

I recently bought the 6800 GS agp (eVGA). I also got the viewsonic vp2030b which has a native res of 16x12.

Smooth gaming with Hitman 2, Doom 3, CS:S, HOMM5, with 4xAA and 8 Aniso @ 16x12.
Any games not to demanding (ie not FEAR) should run fine.

Video image quality seems a bit less good than my 9700pro. In my mind I think.

It is quite loud. And runs hot. Getting a zalman or AC VGA cooler soon.

You can mod it to get it to a 6800 Ultra (16-6 vs. 12-5), but mine had defective pipes, I was really upset. I think they used chips that didn't pass the 6800 GT/U test. It is disappointing not to able to mod it.

Look at this thread

http://www.aoaforums.com/forum/hardware...mod-your-6800gs-agp-ultra-extreme.html

I have an athlon XP @ 2,4 and 1GB KVR.

Good luck

my friend has a 7600GT(amd 64bit 3200 venice at stock and 2gb ram) and he plays Quake 4 at 1024*768 High(not Ultra), so how can you play over that?

Wrong, the Radeon 9600 PRO has a 128-Bit Bus, and only 4 Pixel Pipelines, still be beaten by the 8 Pixel Pipelines of the Radeon 9800SE

I think that Speedzealot was referring to cards with a theoretical configuration of identical pipelines, identical core speed, identical graphics memory and a different memory bus, his comparision was a direct like for like, with the only difference being memory bandwidth. In such a case, it would make a difference. Obviosuly an 8-pipe card would beat a 4-pipe one.

To the OP, it is a good upgrade. I went from a 9800pro to an X800GTO and unlocked that to 16 pipes, so it is a very similar upgrade. And I was very pleased.

I think you'll be pretty happy too. :)

That's irrelavant to this case...

Anyways...

$200 USD seems a lot for a 6800GS, I think. Do you have any other viable options?

the 9800SE does not have a massive performance increase over the 9600pro....i recall it being nearly 1/2 as slow as the 9800pro
