Is a 6800(NU) with 512 mb of RAM better than a 9800 Pro with a gigabyte of RAM for 3d modeling and gaming? It will be in a system with an Athlon 64 3000+ and an Abit KV8 Pro. I will probably be playing FPS from the current generation and 1-2 years past (at 1024x768). For 3d, I will use Maya.

Also, I want to run Linux on this computer. Are the ATI drivers capable?

I'd go with some really fast 512 RAM and a 6800, upgrade to a gig when you get the funds to do so. What's youre budget, maybe you can't go with fast ram, I can't be too sure with the info you've given.

No second thoughts. 512 and 6800.
And as M4H stated Nvidia provides great support for Linux drivers

Ok, I bought the Leadtek 6800 and PC3200 Mushkin RAM (512 MB). Now I'm waiting for NewEgg to ship.
