6800 with 256MB?

Well I've pretty much given up on trying to find a decent deal on 6800GT. I'm going with 6800 and saving myself over $100. It seems to run Doom III very well, and the only other thing I'll need from it is Half-Life 2, don't think I'll have any problems with that.

What I wanted to ask though, did anyone see a 6800 with 256 MB of RAM? They all seem to be 128 which already seems to be not quiet enough for Doom III. If I can find a 6800 for about $300 with 256MB of RAM I think that's great deal right now. Will have this one for now, and upgrade in 1 and a half or 2 years maybe.

Also, since no one really answered this in my last thread, I'd still like to know if a 6800 will be a bottleneck for P4 3.0C? Don't want to know how games will run on them; I just don't want to get a bad match between the CPU and the Video Card.

[EDIT]
Btw, has anyone seem BFG 6800 OC? Supposed to be available on the 15th, but can't find it anywhere. That may be an even better option, since it's a little faster then other 6800s. Still 128MB of RAM though...

For $422.00 I could get a full GT from Best Buy right now. Will be $5 cheaper even after tax. Don't get me wrong, I love ASUS and was going to buy one of their video cards, but those guys really screwed up this round... I don't know what they were thinking when they came up with this one tbh :(

I'm aiming for $300 right now. Don't have a top-of-the-line CPU either, so don't want to overshoot.

Every BB around me is out of stock on GTs, same with every other store and online vendor. :(
I've got a V9999GE and its only a few % behind a full GT. Overclocks very well too.

I have been looking for a 256meg 6800nu also. Asus is the only one I have found so far, but it cost way to much. I am really surprised there are not any more out. I mean you buy 256meg 9600's and FX5200's, but not a 6800nu. That makes alot of sense.

3 BB's around me have the GT's.

How are they not easier to find then they were a couple weeks ago?

Costs more than a 6800NU, but gives much more performance. It just falls a little short of a full GT . . .

That is the biggest rip-off i've ever seen, why would anyone get that when you could get a GT for $400 at retail, and $430 on newegg? Text

It amazes me that people still link to Out Of Stock products. If you are unable to buy the GT cards, then its a moot point.

I did buy the Asus card since trying to find a GT card in stock was impossible a weeka go and its still almost impossible now. The GT performs what? 5 to 10% better than mine? And you have to go to over a dozen different vendors to find one, with all of them over their 399 MSRP? *Sigh* Its never going to sink in, no matter how hard I try.

Phoenix area must be out of stock then . . .

Only GTs in stock at Newegg righ tnow are the XFXs and they are 440. ZZF might have some instock, but they price gouge like crazy. They actually have a 6800U instock, buts its 800.

The closest Best Buy to me that has a GT in stock is 2 hours away. So not every Best Buy has them yet. I don't check every day, but it has been this way for me every time I check. Most of the time none of them have them in stock.

I guess you don't see the point, a GT outperforms it, for the same cost. I'd rather wait, instead of buy an inferior card, and justify the purchase just because it was in stock?

Oh yea, alomst forgot, check the link ITS IN STOCK

This isn't even CLOSE to the biggest ripoff.

Ever hear of the POS X600XT, that costs as much as a 9800Pro and has half the performance? This card offers pretty close to GT performance for GT prices, and is a pretty cool looking, well made card.

I actually found BFG 6800 OC - http://www.computerhq.com/BFG_Technologies_GeForce_BFGR6800O/products/partinfo-id-500417.html

Comes out to $337.99 with shipping. What do you guys think? It's 128 MB DDR, but at least it's already overclocked.

I would just get a cheaper stock clocked 6800nu. They cost around $280. I just don't think the slight clock increase over stock that the BFG gives you is worth almost $60.

Any suggestions for someone who's known for good warranty and 2D quality?

[EDIT]
How about Leadtek or XFX... I know Leadtek is known for good quality, and it's cooling the RAM as well (XFX only has a heatsink over the GPU), but XFX has dual-DVI. What would you pick? Both are $283.00

Here are the links btw:
XFX: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-150-068&depa=1
Leadtek: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-122-193&depa=1

Think I'm leaning towards the Leadtek right now. I do have a dual-monitor setup, but only one is a DVI, so dual-DVI may be needed later, but not yet. It looks like those guys are using a better heatsink so maybe I'll be able to overclock it myself.

All right well after doing some more reading I'll be going with the Leadtek. Will wait till tomorrow to order it, so if anyone else has something to say about it, please do :)

Dual-dvi is the only thing that attracted me to the XFX, but the more I think about it, the more I realize that it's not worth it right now. Especially since I still have a CRT and an LCD, when time comes for me to replace my CRT I'll probably have enough for a new video card as well.

Like I said before though, would still appreciate some suggestions if you guys have them. I'd say I'm 80% sure about this choice right now, so unless you can either provide a better alternative, or some downside to my current choice I think I'll have fun playing CS:S next week :D

I think the little arrows signify 'enhanced mode' speeds. See details in this thread

N-egg gets there clockspeeds wrong quite often. The only 6800 cards that come clocked out of the box above 325 core are the Chaintech AA6800 (358mhz), the Galaxy 6800 (350mhz), and the BFG 6800 OC (350mhz). The Gainward golden sample card looks nice, NewEgg's picture is showing a non-Golden Sample, the thread above shows a picture of a 3rd type Gainward 6800 (GS).

I own a Chaintech AA6800 turbo and would recommend it, mine runs at 390/800. Both N-egg and ZZF have it in stock for $289 shipped.

I guess it depends if you want a red or blue pcb. Both should run 375/850 easy. The Chaintech card has 2.2ns ram vs 2.5ns ram on the Gainward but the Gainwards cooler looks to be slightly better.

The best 128mb 6800 by far is the Galaxy 6800 with it's Silencer cooling and 2.2ns ram. Problem is that it's only available in the UK right now and is over $300 anyways.

The EVGA is still a great deal because it comes with FarCry and has the step-up program.
That Albatron on N-egg looks really nice too ...
Good luck in making your decision, lots to consider :)

The only 256MB 6800NU is the ASUS - and as already pointed out, it costs the same as a GT, so what's the point?

Now, a $300 256MB 6800NU would be a great value, especially given the upcoming 16 pipe softmod and its chances of working...

Regarding soft mod to 16 pipes - as it stands right now it's very possible, but those pipes are damaged and won't work properly. Later when they start using fully functional ships for 6800 they'll probably find other ways of disabling those pipes, so don't think we will see a working soft mod any time soon. But it's good to hope :)

RacerX, is this the card that you mean? Judging by the pictures it's not cooling the memory which isn't too good IMO. How does the 2D quality compare to the Leadtek? I really don't care what color it is, just want good quality for number one, and speed for number 2. If Leadtek has better image quality, then I'll pick that one and overclock it to about 350 myself. Memory is another issue though, how big of a difference in terms of fps between 2.5 and 2.2?

Here is a review on the Asus card for those that don't really see why it's a good deal (as priced).

________________________________________________________

edit - to answer your above question, the picture of the card on NewEgg is wrong (that isn't the turbo AA6800 version it is the standard 6800) ...please see this link for pics of the AA6800 ... yes this is the actual card NewEgg has ...you can also find it here.

2.2ns ram is rated for 900mhz, 2.5 = 800, 2.8=700 ... Almost every other 6800 vanilla has 2.8ns

Some guy who reviewed the Leadtek on NewEgg said he got a killer overclock, and since Leadtek is well known for great 2D and that is something very important to you, maybe you should go with that one. It's not clocked 10% faster out of the box like the Chaintech, but you could easily do that yourself. My only issue with that card is it's aesthetics (I have a windowed case) ... but to each his own.
