next generation proformance?
OC - i know u might get 16 piplines with some 6800s

6800gt is a fairl deal better than the 6800nu.. the 6800ultra is less than 4% better than the gt. Essentially the gt is the card to get.

I would think so, yes. Sure you can get a 6800nu and possible unlock the 4 pipes and 1 vertex shader. Of course that is not guaranteed. Even though umpteen people will say it worked, it still might not. Also no matter what it will never clock the memory up to gt speeds. Also worth nothing is that most gts easily overclock from 350/1000 to 400/1100. which is an ultra. So I would say the 6800gt is definately the card to get.

yea unlockein pipes is just a hit and miss. had 2 bfg6800nu's and only one unlocked. now i feel bad that i didnt save the extra $100 and get a gt

I picked up a 6800NU with one of the best buy/HL2 deals where the card netted out to <$200. At that price, the 6800NU has a great price-to-performance. I was not able to unlock all the pixel pipes (its a BFG). If you can't find that kind of deal on a 6800, then I agree with the others that price-performance is better for the GT (at non-sale prices).

6800NU is definately more bang/buck.

Then again depends on your needs..... If you can afford a 6800GT though I would advice you to go for it.
A card for smart veteran hardcore gamers... 😉
Almost reaching the top in performance for far less the price of the top models....

so far, the best price/performance cards are the 6800GT @ $400 and the 6600GT @ $200. The 6800NU is only slightly faster than the 6600GT, but runs 50% more in price, and the 6800 Ultra is only a bit faster than the 6800GT, for $100 more. If you want a cheap, good card, take the 6600GT over the 6800, and if you want a Fast, good card, take the 6800GT over the 6800.

how would the 6600gt preform in the next generation? i dont want to have to upgrade next year. what company would you reccommend? for the 6800gt?---EDIT----im a gonna get myself a 6800gt i really need to know what brand will handle ultra speeds the best- i plan to oc it air cooling.

If you don't want to upgrade for a while go with logic and get the 6800GT. The 6600GT is already falling behind in some games, a year from now it'll compare like old GF4s do today.

About unlocking pipelines: Most Card Manufacturers will sell a bunch of "defective" 6800Ultra's (the base card) as 6800nu's. I say "defective" because, in the manufacturing process, these cards are less than perfect (I.E., maybe one or two of the pipelines is physically broken...or the GPU just cannot perform stably at 400/1100), but still can perform reliably at the 6800nu level (set by NVidia). So either they lock the broken pipelines, up to 4 of them (if the card has more than 4 broken pipelines, it's pretty much screwed anyway) in the BIOS, or burn them out on the circuit board, write the BIOS as a 6800nu to clock them down, and sell them off as 6800nu's. Also, they do the same to 6800GT's. 6800GT's are most likely 6800U's that "didn't make the cut", so to speak...performed slightly inadequately at Ultra levels, and as such, were clocked down and sold off as GT's. Then this leaves the Ultras as the cream of the crop, filtered and the ones that can perform at Ultra levels extremely reliably. And as such, are sold off as the Ultras.

AFAIK, that's how it's done. Which is why Pipeline unlocking sometimes works; the pipelines aren't "broken", the GPU is simply imperfect...but in other case, the pipelines really are broken.

Anyone more knowledgable care to comment?

Disagree. The 6800 is noticeably faster than the 6600GT at many settings that involve AA/AF, and has the possibility to be even better with unlocking. Obviously the 6800GT is the best choice of the three, and the most expensive.

In order of value, I'd say 6800GT>6800/6600GT(tie)>6800U. The 6600GT is a great budget card, but the 6800 gives you the opportunity to run some AA/AF you never will on a 6600GT. (except in SLI)

i will be running alot of intense games at 1280x1024 with aa/af on so i think the 6800gt is thhe best choice for me but i still dont know which company to go with

Most of them make a decent product. I would probably say that BFG would be the best. If you are going to do any overclocking, go ahead and invest another 30$ on an NV-5 Silencer to cool it down.

yup im ordering my BFG 6800gt from bestbuy.com--EDIT-- haha i hate BB i just found out they dont accept gift cards online which is a load of $hit and im not ordering from those b@$t@rd$. (i got 55 worthless bucks of gift cards) anyways thanks 4 the input.
