6800 v 6800GT

Hey again,

got another topic that has probably been covered hundreds of times, but is a 6800GT really worth the extra 100$ and how long reallistically will a 6800 last me in running the newest games? I have been running a 9000PRO for a while now and been happy with it, I mean it even runs Doom 3, just not as well as I would like. I know the GT has 256MB which really helps it, but it seems it is not THAT much faster in benchmarks then the 6800.

THANKS

seems a good bit faster to me. Has more memory and faster memory not to mention most of the time you can overclock them to Ultra speeds or beyond. yeah Id say its worth it.

Below 12x10 the NU and GT are neck and neck. But once you start turning up the AA, AF, and resolution, the memory bandwidth limitations of the NU cause it to lag behind the GT. I think this gap will continue to grow as new games hit the market as well, give the 12 vs 16 pipeline detail as well.

I'm not surprised a 9000 runs Doom 3, up until my 6800 GT arrived I was running the lowest quality on a geforce 1 ddr and it was playable : ) there was some lag when a door opened later on, but it was nice to be able to play while waiting for a good deal on a GT.
Course it looks much much much better on the GT but half the time the game is so dark that it still has it's ambiance with lower quality settings

I saw a thread over at hardOCP forums about enabling the extra 4 pipelines on the 6800...maybe you'd be willing to take a chance on that? That would at least narrow some of the gap between the two, course I still think the 6800 GT is the best value right now, I don't think the performance gap between the vanilla 6800 and the 9800 XT is high enough to warrant it's price.

Either get the 6800GT for ~$400 or wait for the 6600GT to come out in AGP for ~$200. It will probably be about 2 months before you see the AGP 6600GT hit stores, but if you don't want to break the bank on a new video card, have time to spare, and don't need the absolute top performance, this will be a great deal.

? A 9800 XT costs about $30.00 more than a 6800nu

I also think the memory difference (256MB vs 128MB) will become significant in the next generation of games, as well. Although, that will be into 2005...
