Im currently using an evga 6800 ultra but being that Im doing agp, I have to stick to upgrading to the 7800gs which is also agp. I cant really upgrade my mobo because unforturnately Im using a socket 478 p4 so I have little options.

So how much better is the 7800gs compared to the 6800 ultra? If it is substantially better which manufacturer makes the best 7800gs? THanks for any input

Lol you'll not see any great significant difference between a 7800GS and a 6800Ultra. You'll be better off honestly if you get a new rig altogether with the best bang for the buck cards right now (PCIe)

Agreed, stash that $300 toward the next rig whenever that time comes up. You're not going to do much better than the 6800 Ultra you already have.

A 6800 Ultra is enough, the 7800GS brings overclocking goodness and a more attractive feature set but the performance is very similar, like others said you are better off saving those 300$ towards a new system.

There is at least one Socket 478 Motherboard with PCI-e the Albatron PX915P4C Pro. DOn't know what it's like myself but it might be worth investigating.

Well, I am not sure if this is still available but:

Albatron PX915G4C
Albatron PX915G4C Pro
Albatron PX915G4 Pro

Are motherboards for Socket 478 with PCI-Express x16

This is the newest P4 skt 478 PCIe board. Asus P4RD1-MX. But I'll be damned if you can find one. Zipzoomfly has it listed as backordered and has been like that for months. They don't know when it will be in, I asked. Only place to buy it is NGENX. I'm not sure is they are reputable though. Good luck in whatever you decide.:)

EDIT: NGENX is overseas.

Unless your looking at one of the overclocked 7800GS you wont see much performance change. For those that have the 6800U the next upgrade you should be looking at is a PCIe setup IMHO.

would anyone suggest the 7800gs from a 6600gt? I'm running a Athlon XP 3000, so PCIe would involve a new board and CPU, kinda stupid since AM2 is coming out, and I'll look to replace my CPU when quad-core comes in '07 (so no socket 939 for those chips).

6600gt->7800gs = ~100% faster I believe

A move from a 6600GT to a 7800GS isn't a bad upgrade, I'd be hard pressed to say it 's really worth it, but it'd definatly give you a good performance increase.

The move from a 6800U to a 7800GS is negligable. I'd sit on the 6800U.

I figure you can get an eVGA overclocked for about $320 online, better than what it was initially priced for. Since I'll hang on to this setup for about another year, and the 6600gt is long in the tooth for my screen (24"), I figured the GS would really hold me on, and maybe we'll see another ULI M1695-sort of chipset with the AM2 socket.

Yes, the chart is for PCIe, not AGP, but to does show you it is not worth the upgrade if you look at the 7800GT (which is more powerful than the GS you are looking at).

The performance gap between the 6800 Ultra and 7800 GS is very small. It is very questionable to upgrade to a 7800 GS from either a 6800 GT/Ultra or X800 XT/X850 XT, especially if you don't overclock at all.

My advice is to probably just stick with the 6800 Ultra and save your money.

What about going from a plain-vanilla 6800 to the 7800GS? If I sell the 6800 for $100+, I'll have to shell out $200+ for the 7800GS.

(After typing the above, I can't believe I'm even considering paying multiple hundreds of dollars for a video card! Maybe I can get a freebie from nVidia.)

Moving from a 6800U to a 7800GS doesn't worth it, it may have a bit better feature set etc, and a bit faster (LIke 2%) but doesn't have the horsepower to run them all in a fashion. If I were you I should keep the 6800U, it will last for a while believe me.

What about the eVGA 7800GS Superclock? Overclocked to 460MHz compared to stock 375MHz. Would it be worth the upgrade now?

If you can sell that 6800ultra for $250 (easy) it's worth the extra $60. No more than that though, imo.

PM me if you want to sell a 6800 ultra for that, providing you haven't monkied with it.
