Hate to bring this up again, but im in a market for a new vid card. If money is no object, which card is the best for gaming (mostly HL2, Doom3, Farcry, Call of Duty)?

Both are great cards IMO. The 6800 Ultra beats the x800XT in doom. However, it seems to be the other way around in HL2. Either way, i think u ll be happy with either cards.

X800XTPE spanks 6800Ultra in Farcry, HL2, UT2k4, and a slew of other games. I think the only game that 6800Ultra is better is Doom.

what's with this "spanking" talk. Yeah, XTPE > 6800 ultra in pretty much everything but doom3 but not by that much (noticable) difference. Anyhow, even if money is no object, it is REALLY hard to find a XTPE in stock anywhere (unless you are willing to pay like $700-$800 on ebay) while 6800 pro is fairly easily available. Also if you are thinking PCI-Express then think SLI and go Nvidia.

Thats crap... only Doom my a$$.

Also do you really think it is fair to compare the 6800U to the XT PE. Why not the elusive UE. Then we would find it more even. Even so the 6800U is just as fast as the X800XT.

Either card you pick will have its ups and downs... all in all they are the same performance.

the x800xt is a better card than the ultra. period. unless doom 3 is your main concern. the x800xt pe is better than the ultra particulary if aa and af are concerns for you when you game. irregardless though, when it comes to actually using any of these cards in the real world, you cant notice the difference playing a game on a 6800ultra, x800xt, 6800gt, x800xt pe. Apart from when you run 3dmark and decide to carry on about a pointless and lacking in use 5 digit #.:shocked::cookie:

No it is not a better card than the Ultra period. They are dead even. The Ultra falling behind the XTPE in places however it is even witht eh regular XT. Also the Geforce 6 series have a larger feature set... so that has to be put into perspective.

I agree with your second to last sentence.

Flamers let loose!

X800XT-PE=6800U-E>X800XT=6800U>6800GT>X800P>6800NU

Not including HL2, D3, and feature sets. All in all, pick whatever one meets your particular needs and stop shoving your propoganda down others' throats ;)

true true.. i meant to write the x800xt PE is better period.
 I just meant in terms of actual benchmarks with aa/af in particular and all that rubbish. The xtpe mildly outperforms the ultra, apart from d3. What really matters though is that second to last sentence. If two people buy the exact same computer, but one gets an ultra and one a gt. With your naked eyes... you will not notice a performance difference in gaming. Your wallet however... will! :p

I think the point is, forgetting the x800p and 6800nu. the first 4 are basicly the same. You'll only see differences in benchmarking. And that is good for nothing. All those 4 cards are good to go for all the new games to come. I think Quake 4 will be the next game to make you say hey, that new nv50 is much better than my 6800series. Than again, I guess two sli'ed gts or ultras will handle quake 4 just fine. After all its just going to be the d3 engine, with beefed up visuals.

I would be quite happy with a 6800ultra or ultra extreme, x800xt or xt pe. Hell even the x800pro or 6800gt would be nice to have. Take the best deal or whichever company has your trust.

Why don't you change your thread title wiseguy. It's not appropriate to try to draw posts with flamebait.

you'd have to find either card first....but xt pe would probably be the better overall card
That could change depending on HL2 performance on the ATI platform.

half-life 2 performance on the ATI platform has already been tested a long time ago. it's HL2-ATI as it is DOOM3-nVidia.

Ok, listen I can tell you that a Ford Focus can beat Lamborghini Murcielago in a race. If I dont show any proof, that can be true or not true.

Why don't you read some benchmarks and see for yourself how each card performs in games. In Call of Duty and Doom 3, 6800 series will win hands down. Also 6800 series dont do bad in counter-strike so I dont think ATI will have any significant dominance in HL2. ATI won when Nvidia drivers were unoptimized, but Nvidia is keeping things close.

Here are some benchmarks you should look at:

Digit-Life (More recent drivers)
- Nvidia wins HL2 here
- Nvidia wins counter-strike too (based off HL2 engine) = FiringSquad
XbitLabs (More recent)

The problem is that ATI did dominate in some benchmarks (like Far Cry, HL2, etc 6 months ago, but Nvidia drivers made things much closer) Pretty much 6800Ultra and X800xt Pe will offer equal gaming experience but ATI cards suck in Doom 3 (so expect them to suck in Quake 4 and all other games based off Doom 3 engine). Also different review sites show different information (you can find sites that show Ati winning HL2 and Counter-Strike). Make sure to note that often a card might have a higher average frame rate, but lower minimum framerate (thus actually offering an inferior gaming experience).

Nvidia cards also let you use HDR (albeit at a huge performance loss).

If i was you, i'd just get 6800GT for $380 because the price of admittion for X800xt PE/6800Ultra is outrageous for the mere performance improvement. 6800GT should get to Ultra speeds to.

Here are some older reviews with somewhat outdated drivers:
VGA Charts IV
Anandtech
Fastest Cards of Summer 2004

A better way to evaluate the card is not see which cards dominates in more games than the other. Instead you should be concerned with the performance of the cards in the games you play the most.

But if you want the ultimate verdict. X800xt pe is better for the majority of the games but its value is questionable, especially when refresh products will come out in December, possibly forcing a reduction in pricing from the outrages 500-600US for x800xt pe cards. So why pay that much now, when in 2 months it'll drop severely? Same applies to 6800Ultra.

I haven't seen any x800xt benches with the 256mb fix. The fix is supposed to improve HL2 performance dramatically. Keeping in mind that the x800xt beat the ultra even before the fix.
