6800 Ultra and NV5 questions

Hey all, got two quick questions.

First, I am under the impression that the NV5 works by using the fan to circulate air over the heatsink and then out the back of the case through the supplied brackets. How then does one install with an ultra, as an ultra takes up two pci brackets anyways. As a follow up, how many slots would an ultra + NV5 occupy. I am currently (with just the card) able to use my third slot fairly easily, and would like to keep doing so if possible.

Thanks,
Smithers

If I am not mistaken, the reason an Ultra takes a PCI slot is that its cooler is too large. If you replace the cooler with the silencer, it should be the same size as a GT with the NV silencer.

When you install a NV 5 you remove the old heatsink and since the NV 5 is actually shorter than the stock ultra cooler you gain a little space. By no means is the first PCI slot very accesable, so you still loose that one, but it won't interfere with any more down the line.

Your impression is right, the fan is on the innermost part of the card and circulates air across copper fins (that are connected to a copper baseplate which covers the ram as well as the GPU) and out the back using the next slot down on the back of your case. This allows it to exhaust all the warm air thus reducing the overall temps inside your case.

I think MrSmithers question is what happens to the slot backplane. The Ultra reference design already has a double PCI slot cover which is solid closed, so you would have to replace it with one which has half of it open for the exhaust.

I'll go Zalman, BTW, and get rid of the air via normal 80mm back fans.

I believe the NV5 now comes with a replacement backplate for the 6800U. You simply remove the original double-width one and replace it with the regular sized one supplied.

Yes Martin, that is indeed what I was asking. Creig, I also heard that it came with a replacement, but how does one remove the double wide backplate from the card? I have replaced vid card coolers before, but removing the backplate sounds hard/scary. Does anyone have any links to instructions for this?

Thanks,
Smithers

Ok, so I suppose my final question is: Does anybody know for sure which online retailers are selling the version that includes the double bracket, or am I just going to have to call around and check?

Thanks again guys,
Smithers

I believe it was back in late fall that they started putting the extra plate in with cooler, along with stronger screws and something else that escapes me at the moment. I would think that any retailer with a decent amount of sales would have sold the older ones long ago.

And if you DO happen to get one of the older ones (unlikely, in my mind) simply drop Arctic Cooling an email and I'm sure they'd send you the replacement backplate. They seem like a pretty decent company overall.

No, but nothing a .22 cal can't fix.

Just watch out that you don't hit the card, I'm not sure bullet holes are RMAable 😀
