6800 Softmod Success Rate?

I know there've been a lot of posts about it already, but I just wanted a poll of it. Post the brand you got as well if you want to.

No. BFG6800 NU OC. Vertex yes. Pipes no. No because my 3d mark 03 scores didn't change much after the half-successful soft mod.

PNY 6800NU (A1),16x1,6vp OC 350/800

Doom 3, BFV, Rome Total War all run great. But I get some artifacting in Far Cry on Ultra High settings with SM 3.0

Didn't work for me. I did the softmod, restarted and opened 3dmark03...there was artifacting all over the place so i changed it back. At least it didn't damage the card.

I'm heading back to college with card in hand so I'll be voting myself in about 6 hours or so. Wish me luck 🙂. Looks like statistically it'll be a coin toss so far.

same, mine was a BFG.

Yes to pipes and yes to vertex shader. This is a BFG 6800OC. I haven't tried overclocking it yet.

The infamous CompUSA PNY Verto 6800 softmodded from 12x1fp,5vp to 16x1fp,6vp with no artifacts.

I am running the 66.81 drivers in 3Dmark05:

Out of the box: 3326
Softmodded no O/C: 3702
Softmodded w/ suggested O/C @363/775: 4082

Also a PNY Verto 6800 from CompUSA. Was able to get 16p, 6v with no problems.

FW 66.93
3DMark03:

Out of the box: 8837
16p, 6v, no OC: 9637
16p, 6v @363/743: 10286

I got artifacts and eventually crashed trying 363/775.

Much better than the 5194 I was getting with my stock MSI GeForce FX 5900 XT. (Bought and returned it last week... pretty much the same price!)

Not too shabby.

PNY 6800

Still trying to find a good tutorial site to get the details on getting the best results as I have never OC'd a vid card before.

I see the soft mods, and suggested settings as well as the pipelines being opened. If someone could point me to a good list on how to do each of these as well as decent definitions of what it is actually being done for my learning pleasure in a decent step by step order I would be eternally grateful. 🙂 Then I could actually participate in the poll properly

can someone help. i used aquamark3 to bench my card.
my card unlocks sucessfully but i get artifacts in hl2, but not in aquamark. weird.

case 0: default (47661)
case 1: default + enable pixel unit 0 (48756)
case 2: default + enable vertex unit (47695)
case 3: enable both pixel 0 and unit 3 (48777)

can someone interpret what's going on?
also, when i make the modifcations, i get artifacts in hl2 but not in aquamark3. help?

As a long time lurker, but first time poster, I do have one question for the people with BFG cards with lifetime warranty's, aren't you worried that you are voiding one of the benefits of your card i.e the lifetime warranty? I just bought one and have been having problems with artifacts and game freezing. In another thread here, there is talk of using Rivatuner (or another software mod) to set 2D and 3D speeds to the same number which would fix it. I talked with BFG support and they suggested that doing this would void my warranty.

Kuch

Kuch,

Overclocking can void the warranty.
A failed BIOS flash can void the warranty.
Softmodding should not void the warranty.

You are enabling pipelines that are masked in the BIOS through a software patch. Enabing the disabled pieces of hardware can not hurt the other components. Unless BFG has some clause in their user agreement that you can only use drivers supplied by them or Nvidia then the service rep. was feeding you a line.

Really I just assumed that unlocking pipes would void your warranty? Seems everything else does. Certainly makes the vanilla 6800 even more desirable. 50% seems low for success rate from what I have been reading. Wonder if those with a bad experience are more likely to answer.
