6800 series WMV HD

I was away for a while until yesterday when I read the long thread on 6800's broken purevideo functionality.

1. So can the 6800GT play/decode video eg. WMV/AVI/mpeg etc (not HD) just as good as comparable ATI cards then??

2. And the only thing broken in the 6800 series is just for high definition files/streams? And does ATI cards play HD WMV better than the 6800 series?

I basically want to get a grip on what the problem is whether the 6800 series is simply slower and takes more cpu time for all types of video decoding or is it just a problem on high def files/streams.

The only thing the (AGP) 6800 cards accelerate is MPEG2 decoding. *All* other video files have to be decoded 100% by the CPU. However, with today's CPUs, it is rarely a problem except with HD videos (which, obviously, take a lot more CPU power to decode).

ATI does the same thing, but is maybe going to have hardware-assisted WMV decode at some point. NVIDIA's appears to be permanently broken on the AGP 6800-series cards.

Thanks dude, so an ATI x800pro isn't going to be any better then for HD video or AVI/MOVs whatever?

And what about encoding? Does ATI or Nvidia have the edge here?

Neither of them do anything about encoding.
