6800 or 6800GT ?

So I don't want to sound like a retard but what is the difference between the 6800 and the 6800GT? I know that you can score a BFG 6800 and unlock the extra pipelines so that it runs close to a GT, but the GT does have double the memory of the regular 6800. Does twice the memory make it any better or, is it just there so people say "oh well it?s got twice the memory so it?s twice as fast."

It's better, but "unlocked" 6800, if you're comfortable doing that, is probably close to, if not equally, as fast.

Extra memory does help in texture heavy games like Doom3, and the 6800 series is fast enough to make use of it.

Do you just unlock the pipelines with Rivatuner? I'm comfortable unlocking them with that. Just as long as I don?t have to sotter something 🙂

even if you do unlock all the pipelines.. the GT is still a bit faster due to the ram, GDDR3 and double the amount. And thats only IF you do get the pipes unlocked.

Hi!

I got a Dell XPS Gen4 with a 6800 256MB PCI-express card. It idles at ~53C while I'm in Windows, but I have not checked it after playing CS:Source. Is there a way to find out what brand of card this is and how hot it gets during games? 53C is according to my nVIDIA drivers. (The latest WHQL on nVIDIA's site)

From the looks of it, the HSF on it just says GeForce 6800 and looks like a 'reference' nVIDIA card. No labels or anything on it. I'll check out Rivatuner to see more if I can...unlocking it sounds kinda fun. 😉

Thanks!

6800nu with 16 pipes is a good unlock on the card. But the cut off of 128mb, and lack of GDDR3 simply burninate the card for the future. Future games are going to have better textures, and therefore will need 256mb of ram or even more. 6800GT is the way to go, this way you buy what you want, not buy what you get and hope you get what you want.

If you want to unlock anything at all, go for an x800pro VIVO and try to unlock it to x800XT PE. That is a MUCH more worthwhile unlock than 6800nu to 16 pipes and 6 shaders.

6800 supports nVidia PureVideo, while the 6800GT doesn't. I don't know if the feature is of any impotance to you, but it's worth looking into...

I am pretty sure the PCI-e version of the 6800 is a different core (nv-41) and unlockable. Only AGP (nv-40) cards are unlockable. If I am wrong, I apologize in advance, but my brain tells me I have read that before, but I can not find the supporting information now. I will keep looking and edit if I find something different.

Thanks Navid and thank you Zardnok for the info! I am also going to update to the 71.21 (i think) drivers...right now I'm using the 66.93s I think from nVIDIA's site. I heard there are a lot of fixes and performance issues resolved in the 71.21 series.

Guys, what are your opinions of this card.
ASUS GE FORCE 6800GT V9999GT/TD AGP 128MB DDR. It has a nVidia chipset.
Is this a good buy. I can get one for $360 and that is about as high as I can spend. Any opinions would be great! Thanks.

That card is a good one eith the GT core, BUT it uses DDR rather than GDDR3 and only has 128MB.

I just installed the V9999GT/TD/256M/A which is a "real" GT and is is nothing but awsome. Well... except the price that is. If you can swing it, go for the 256. It has a much better PCB design and power conditioning. (It is the same PCB as the 6800 Ultra).

If not, I assume the 128 is a high quality card (I trust ASUS on this one) and you would be happy with the 128MB version you are asking about. On the bright side, since ASUS' release of the 256MB GT, the price on the 128MB card has dropped out of the stratisphere to.... nearly affordable. 😉

Thanks so much for your help, what is GDDR3, a new type of memory? Thanks again, I just dont think I can afford that card because I am building a whole new rig and am at 700 with my CPU, MB, and VC. Thanks!

I really don't know the details, except it is faster and doesn't get as hot.

I don't blame you for not wanting to drop $429.00 on the video card.

the 128MB version would be a good compromise in my opinion. YMMV

I also believe that the GDDR3 doesnt use as much power as DDR1, but that should make no noticable difference (probably why it's cooler)
