hello, i've got a 1700+, 512mb with a TI4400.

best buy has a deal for far cry, d3, and 6800OC (over in hot deals).

if i got the 6800OC would, that be "way too much" for my 1700? am i just severely cpu bound? doubtless i would get better graphics and better fps, but am i limiting myself with the 1700?

thank you.

The 1700+ will be a severe limitation. The 512mb of ram will not limit your FPS much, but will cause you to suffer from long loading times, among other issues. If your chip is a Tbred-b, I don't see why you aren't overclocking it. You should be able to easily hit 2100mhz at the least, which would give you better performance than a 2500+.

The graphics card is probably a good purchase for you, as it's easy enough for you to upgrade your CPU/RAM for minimal money. You could always try it out on your current CPU to see if it's satisfactory for you.

Depends on the game res. and settings you use as to how much the 1700+ will hold you back. You likely are running 2100DDR or maybe asynch 2700DDR and system bandwidth isn't too stellar either eh? I'd suggest selling the ti4400 and 1700+ and using the money to buy a faster CPU and/or overclock as my primate friend suggests. Here are some benchies I ran with a GT OC@6800U OC speeds *slightly higher core* to give you an idea of how a slower CPU handles 1280x1024 4x/8x in a couple popular titles. It will also show my results@10x7 without the AA/AF in 2k1se, UT2K3 Bot match, and AQ3 *4x AF* where the CPU is more heavily involved, a weak CPU really shows it's weakness in these situations. Though at about the 2400+ stock level everything is readily playable which is why I think selling the 4400 and 1700+ and buying a faster CPU would be a good idea, I could be wrong though....

Spend another $100 and also get something like the Frys AMD 2800+ with NF2 motherboard for $99.

Otherwise, I'd hold off on the upgrade, as I don't think you'll see any of the benefits of a faster video card like the 6800. Well, not $300 worth anyways.

Unless the 2500+ is @ 2300mhz
