to run all my games...ex: HL 2...Doom 3...FEAR etc...at 800x600 or 1024x768?

I never play with higher resolutions than that...I like the size advantage for the aim aspect and whatnot...

if anyone could give me an example of my FPS on DOD:S with a 6800 GT on 800x600 it would be greatly appreciated...

Yup.. it will be fine for those games, assuming you don't have a Celeron or something. I currently run HL2 @ 1680x1050 @ 4xAA/8xAF, all high. Similar settings for Doom3. In FEAR I can do 1280x800 0xAA/0xAF, all high (no soft shadows or volumetric lighting).

So, running all of those games at 800x600 or 1024x768 should be no problem at all. Oh, and I have no idea about the FPS in DOD:S, but I get consistent 40+FPS in HL2, D3, and FEAR at my settings.

I run all of them mediocrely at least with a 6600GT, and all at 4x AA (other than FEAR), so you should be able to run them beautifully.

Yes. Of course I assume you are running a decent CPU with adequate memory

Yeah, that'll definitely be fine. In the FEAR benchmark included in the MP demo (running a 6800GT at Ultra speeds here), I got about 66fps average at 1024x768. Too bad I like to use my monitor's native resolution of 1680x1050 though :p

In the Counter-Strike Source stress test I get 135 FPS average with my 6800GT at 400/1050, my A64 Venice at 2.6 GHz, with 2 GB of RAM, and at 1024x768 with 4xAA and 8xAF.

My FPS basically never drops below 40 FPS at my settings, I have a A64 3200+ Clawhammer with 1 GB RAM.

Those CPUs seem like overkill, why wouldn't you get a cheaper CPU and a better GPU? E.g. get a A64 3500+ and a 7800GT?

3500+ Venice: $201
7800GT: $340

4200+ X2: $400
6800GT: $250 (used)

You would save about $100 with the 3500/7800GT and have a better gaming rig (with a new video card, rather than used).

I would figure it is easier to upgrade the CPU to dual-core now and buy a better vid card when it comes down in price...but technically...the CPU would be cheaper in the long run I think...

6800GT is a very nice card. i tried FEAR beta at 1024 768 at 2xAA all high. Ran without any lagg.

Quake IV - All high 1152 res with 4xAA. got 60+FPS . Vsync was on

AOE III - i had to lower the res for this. 1024 everything set on high . i get lagg when there is a HEAVY combat.

COD2: 1152 res All high 2xAA 30FPS . even when fps dips at 20fps i dont notice any lagg. runs really smooth

Civ IV - no clue

BF2 - you would rather increase the ram than upgrade the gfx for this game. with 2gb 1280 1024 2xAA All high . No lagg. runs smooth.

as you can see 6800GT current games fine but it prolly wont last long. i would say in about 6 months + you would have to lower the settings to low/ medium and lower the res to 800 to play the games. Just like 9800pro now a days

CSS Stress I get 160.1fps @ 4xAA 16xAF @ 1024x768 @ 430/1150
FEAR I get about 85fps in the stress at 1024x768 almost all at max 0xAA 0xAF
Haven't done any D3 benchmarks, but it is rarely dips below 60fps on high @ 1024x768.

Pick up an NV Silencer 5. I love mine.

It should be good enough. I can play HL2 in 1600x1200, Doom 3 in 1280x960 and FEAR in 800x600 with almost all the in-game settings turned up and the framerate always stays over 60. I have to drop the resolution if I want to use AA though.

A 9800 Pro will play all of those smoothly at those resolutions, with a 6800GT you'd be set. Though, like others in the thread have mentioned, you'd get more bang for the same buck by going with a Venice and a 7800 GT.

yep

my 6800gt handled HL2 supremely at 12x10 2xaa 8xaf, doom 3 also was the same, FEAR i had to turn down to 10x7, and if HL2 is anything to go by i reckong DOD:S will run just as smooth

You're planning to buy a new 6800 GT? Beware! The prices for those are suspect compared to the prices for the much more powerful 7800 GTs. The 7800 GTs have been on sale for as low as $290 after rebate plus shipping. If you can get a new 6800 GT for under $250 then maybe it would be an OK buy.

As for the processor, it depends on what you're planning to do with it. Would you be doing anything that would make use of dual cores? If you overclock you might be interested in one of the new Opteron chips. (I'd go for the Opteron 146 (Socket 939) for $160 + shipping from TankGuys.com.) The nice thing about getting a lower-level Socket 939 chip is that presumably, unlike the prices of older video cards, the more powerful chips will drop in price eventually. So, two years from now you could probably upgrade to the most powerful Socket 939 chip for a reasonable price.
