By the time you get the XT-PE from Gateway, it'll only be worth $398. A couple day wait it reasonable, even a week is, but there's just no point in waiting a month for a slightly better card, when you can have a really good card at the same price today.

Well, the X800XT-PE is a $499 card, and performs considerably better than the GT at stock, so getting it for $398 (even if you have to wait a month) is a pretty good deal. I don't think you're going to find them widely at that price a month from now -- if they were, it would drive the X800Pro's price to $300 or lower, along with the 6800GT. There's just too much demand for that to happen right now. If you can get an X800XT for $400, and waiting a month won't kill you (it's unlikely that Doom3 or HL2 will be out in that time frame), it's certainly worth considering. Of course, a month from now Gateway could just push the date back even further, so you should take that into account as well.

It is true, though, that the 6800GT is a pretty damn good card, and even at MSRP ($400) its price/performance is not that bad (it's ~1.5x the speed of a 9800Pro at stock, and ~2x the cost). But right now, I would strongly advise waiting the market out. Prices on these cards are going to shift downwards over the next six months, as availability increases and the PCI-E versions start coming out.

I think either card will perform much better than current cards.

I just ordered myself an X800pro.

Im not a fanboy, but I do perfer ATi. I think they take more elegant approach to their hardware. I dont like the fact that the Nvidia offerings take up 2 slots and need tons of power. To me, the X800pro is cheaper by about $80 than the Nvidia offering because my 300W power supply is sufficient (as opposed to the Nvidia which would require me to buy a 450W powersupply). I also don't like that Nvidia cards are louder than the ATi cards.

Beyond that, the review at HardOCP convinced me to go with the ATi card, granted they always seem to favor ATi. In their new qualitative 'benches' the X800pro was playable at the same settings as the Ultra in everything.

Maybe I am out of the loop (but I hope not), but I havent seen overwhelming evidence in the favor of the 6800GT. I suspect I will be happy with my purchase. But there is time to cancel, so convince me otherwise please.

EDIT: I just changed my order to a 6800GT. Lookin forward to the performance boost. I had a 9700pro and probably didnt need to upgrade, but i wanted to finally have a top end system and w/ Doom3 coming i figured what the hell

I too debated, but I couldn;t find a 6800GT instock anythere or an X800XT, so for the current generation and X800pro it is (unless you want to wait a month or two)

I am sorry but you didn't do your research. 6800GT takes one slot, and requires 300W power supply, just like x800 Pro.

I agree, they?re both good cards. You?re not really going to miss hugely either way. The 9800?s were far and away technically superior to the 5900?s.

It seems to me ATI may have sacrificed some non-AA/AF performance on the X800?s for better AA/AF performance, so the 6800GT may look better without AA/AF -- the X800pro?s look better with AA/AF.

They each have their ?strong? points ?the 6800GT has SM3.0 ?the X800 has better usable AA (6AA).

The 6800 GT made me convert to a ATI fanboy to a Nvida fan boy ;)

It really is the better card now.

If I had to buy a card now I would get 6800 GT, but I am glad I do not have to buy a card now. :)

It seems most people are banking on driver improvements and PS3.0 games to really put the card ahead of x800 Pro. While it certainly is reasonible to assume driver improvements and future games will make it a great card it is by no means a sure thing. I plan on waiting at least one major driver revision, maybe two, before making my final decision.

FWIW, I am currently using a 9700 Pro, before that a GF3.

i love ati and their cards, GT is just... better. nvidia owned ATI during the ti4xxx days, ATI pwnd nvida during the 9x00 days, and looks like nvidia has the upper hand with the 6800 series.

I'm getting a X800 XT for $426.00 (shipped w/tax). You guys are getting me worried a little, heh. But according to THIS article, the X800 PRO was keeping pace with the 6800 GT (on average with wins + loses). I feel safe again lol.

The x800 is a good performer. Nothing to be worried about.

Yea, I mean regradless...its still twice the performance of a 9800 XT.
