How much of an actual performance difference is there between a BFG 6800 GT and a BFG 7800 GT? Is there enough of a difference to justify the extra $150-odd dollars, or would I be better off just getting the cheaper one?

Looking at the recent games, the 7800gt is usually at least as fast or faster at 1900x1400 than a 6800gt at 1600x1200. If you plan on keeping the card for a year or longer, and not just as a stop gap card, the 7800gt is worth the extra cost.

yeah, 7800GT is much faster than 6800GT. With 7800GT, and a decent rig, you can play almost every games in 1600*1200, some's with AA. With 6800GT, you are limited to 1280*1024, some even to 1024*768 (like FEAR)

I can find 7800GTs at mutiple vendors from multiple companies for ~$300, some even less.
So that either means that he is thinking about grossly overpaying for his 7800GT or he found a 6800GT for $150.
I admit, I was just kind of rounding from memory, which apparently isn't as accurate as I thought, or maybe prices have come down since the last time I seriously looked around, which was a couple months ago.

Seriously though, GT prices have bottomed out. There is no other card on the market that has more bang for your buck than a 7800GT. In fact, a new 6800GT will probably run you $275, there are a couple of GTs floating around out there that can be had for $275 after mail in rebate.
That being said, if you are really strapped for cash, get the 6800GS. Near 6800GT performance, better with an overclock, for ~$200
It's probably almost twice as fast (or faster) at some games. And it supports transparent AA, equivalent to adaptive AA on ATI cards, which smooths out alpha textures like foliage and fences.
