6800 GT @ Ultra core temps, whats normal?

I am runnig my BFG 6800GT at 400/1100. I was worried about overheating the core with all these reports about 90 C while gaming. Well, after overclocking and playing Half-Life 2 for 4 hours at 1600x1200, max settings, 2xaa, 4xas, my core temp was 68 C though most of the time it was mid 60's ( I have the temp display in my second monitor). Is this normal? I am using the stock cooling (dual blue-LED fans) and my case is a Antec Super-Lanboy.

This temp seems too low to me, espcially since my CPU is pusing 48 c under load. I am waiting for my new case fans and controller and wanted to get a NV silencer, but now I am not so sure about the silencer. This thing sounds like a jet engine when the comp starts up (those dual 40mm screeching fans) but after startup it is pretty quiet. Even after gaming the fans never spun up (do they need to hit a certain threshhold like 70 c or something?)

I think I am going to get a silencer anyway for sound issues and for summer cooling (house temps right now are 65ish F but will be much greater in summer)

Just wondering what others have experienced with their temps.

Well, I don't have the BFG, and I have the plain vanilla 6800, but I'm seeing numbers almost identical to yours. It's passively cooled (Gigabyte 6800) and it idles btwn mid 50's to mid 60's. Gaming doesn't seem to raise the temp too much, even though I'm slightly OCed. HTH

Stock: 325/700
Currently: 375/800
 
I seem to recall hitting 80-82C on my unlocked BFG 6800oc using the stock cooler. I don't recall if I had it overclocked at the time.

The NV Silencer doesn't let me hit 60C now (not overclocked). 🙂
 
man, 80 is pretty high, what is the cutoff temp? the temp tab lists it as 120c but that seems way too hot to me...

hmm...been playing around with my bfg 6800U OC - playing HL2/NFS:U2 - video card temp reads between 52C and 58C - stock everything. Mind you, I have 10 80mm fans in my case 😉

EH??? how do you incorporate so many cans into your case. Isn't it just a confused air tornado inside your computer then. Explain your fan placements or try to please =D

 
Well, I have a lian li pc70 case - bought almost 4 yrs ago. Currently have 2 - 80mm intake fans(fanning air thru the hdd brackets. 4 - 80mm exhuast fans (2 located above the psu and the other 2 just above the cpu fan. The other 4 - 80mm fans (2 - modified brackets with 2 - 80mm fans each over the agp and pci slots.

Spike, sounds like your reported temp is on the mark. I've got the BFG 6800GT (single fan version). I don't overclock it and it idles at 57C. In Unreal Tournament 2004 it gets up to 65C. Try downloading and running this temperature stress test:

The highest my card got was 82C while running it. That application will be a good indicator of how good the cooling is on your card. I plan to install an nv5 silencer next week and hopefully that will improve the cooling and make it run quieter.

Thanks for that, this test should be a nice way to compare my card before and after a NV silencer. Now I just have to buy a silencer...

I just bought a silencer from newegg last night. I've been on a silence kick the last couple of weeks and my main goal of the nv5 is to quiet down that fan. The better cooling is just a bonus!
 
Hello, i got a Gigabyte 6800 GT (DH version, the one with the heat pipe) and my idle temp is around 60-62C. When gaming it reaches 86 max. I dont really know if this is normal. Its just what i get from V-Tuner2 utility.

Also, using Detonator 66.93 and latest vga bios and v-tuner2 utility version.
 
I got mine today, and its running about the same, after about 4hours on HL2 with nearly maxed gfx i got a temp of ~70c.

Now to me thats a scary temp. The card i got is the 6800GT, Gigabyte one with nice blue fan and massive heatsink with heatpipe. (fan is on the Bottom of the card) so its visible.

Anyone let me know if these temps are majorly off?
 
I have the same Gigabyte card and those temps are normal. (see Gigabyte 6800GT thread). Personally, I've never seen my card above 84C. I'm using the stock frequencies of 367/1050.

These chips are supposedly built to handle the temps and I believe the cards are designed to throttle back at 120C.
 
What do you mean stock frequencies 367/1050?

Mines got 350/1000 from factory. I also got the Gigabyte 6800GT with the blue fan and massive heatsinks and heatpipes.

I have the latest software and drivers for the VGA card.
 
I'm aware that Nvidia's reference card is 350/1000 but my Gigabyte card (GV-N68T256DH-N) has a default clock of 367/1050 - came this way out of the box. I have the heatpipes and the blue fan too.

 
i got that card, clocked at 350 / 1000, but if i tell the nvidia driver to give me its "optimum" thats what numbers i get....
 
If I use the "optimum" settings I get 387/1080. I find I get some lockups and lower benchmarks scores with "optimum" settings.
 
My BFG 6800 GT OC is clocked at 420/1100 and I get temp around 65c. I dont know how accurate that is because I m using the latest drivers 71.something and there is a known issue that for the 6800 series the temp monitor displays 20% higher than previous drivers. I also lifted the stock heatsink and wiped off all the stock shmeg and applied AS5 even on the mosfets. Also make note that When I pulled the mosfet sink to apply AS5 I noticed there was actually a very tiny gap between the two surfaces. I slightly bent it so now they are flush. The mosfet sink now gets warmer than before meaning its actually transfering heat.
 
Has anyone mounted a NV silencer 5 on of these BFG cards? I have heard of problems getting it aligned correctly on some cards. I want to get one of these if there are no issues with this particular 6800 GT (don't have the knowledge or patience to sand it), as the stock dual 40mm fan heatsink doesn't seem to work very well. It idles at about 63C and goes to around 79C on a typical load despite the reported case temperature being around 28C, and is also a little noisy. This is with the 66.93 drivers and stock speeds. I could try replacing the standard paste/pads with something better if that has worked for anyone.
 
I had a eVGA 6800GT that would idle in the low to mid 50s and under load would hit the 90s according to the nTune software, never had a problem with it. My x850 runs about the same temps, although it is much quieter. The fan turns alot slower even at 90C it's only turning about 10-20% of Max. So I guess 90C isn't that hot according to the software.
