6800 GT power connector

Has anyone had problems with a dodgy power connector on one of these cards? I have a BFG 6800GT AGP (second version) and the slightest nudge to the card or cable (and sometimes even the case) causes the thing to disconnect somewhere, causing a colorful checkered mess to be displayed and a subsequent lockup. The cable doesn't actually fall out or even appear to shift but the colorful crap shows that something has come off in there. I know this is the problem because I can always cause/fix it by wiggling the power cable going to the card. The cable included with the card was looser than a normal and made the problem much worse, but it still happens with any cable I have tried. I hadn't gotten the problem for some time but it came up again recently; I was cleaning the machine out and might have just touched the cable.

Not a big deal, but it can get annoying. I guess I could get the card replaced by BFG but I don't want to go for several weeks without it. How long does it take them to replace it?

It's never fun to have a card replaced. Besides the hassle of getting an RMA and packaging, etc... it can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. (All depends on where you bought it).

Little problems like this are why some cards cost a lot more or less than others for "the same thing"

While it may be a little hassle, I recommend replacing the card (little annoyances can get to be big ones.... especially after the warranty expires)

Think of it this way. BFG, XfX, MSI.... these are cut rate producers and the rate is cut by slightly inferior quality. You paid a lot less for the card.... it was so you could afford the shipping.

BFG is NOT a cut-rate producer. How could they deliver a lifetime warranty on inferior cards? If they cut back anywhere it's the bundle which doesn't matter to me because I already have the games I want to play.

A replacement should take about two weeks (you ship to them, they usually ship to you the day they get your card).

you mean like Visiontek lifetime warranty?

surely you don't believe Visiontek was a top quality supplier???

edit: Marketing gimmik does not a quality manufacturer make! (you can quote me)

BFG's life time warrenty is NOTHING like Visiontek's man. It IS actauilly the LIFE TIME of the card NOT just when it is bing manufactered... So when it does BFG actually gives you a NEW card that is of a newer generation. Just listen to anybody who has had to RMA one.

I respect your opinion and assume you can respect the fact that I disagree.

FWIW, I hope time proves you to be right.

Not the kind of thing I'm able to get terribly emotional about.

edit: I see you joined Anandtech about the same time I did. I don't know if you remember, but when Visiontek appeared out of no where (Best Buy began selling their stuff) everyone was terribly pissed when some of us questioned their quality and their ability to back their promises. Yes they were the cheapest, which won them the raves of Anandtech reviewers, but time told.... I was not trying to insult anyone, but quality is quality and no amount of hype will fix the lack of it. I really do hope BFG is different, but I am skeptical.

BFG is no joke. 24\7 tech support based outside Chicago (not New Delhi) and they come overclocked out of the box. They had to build some trust up with Nvidia for NV to let them offer factory overclocks.

I can respect that. I've just never heard anyone have a bad experience with a BFG card, essepecially with thier 24-7 live tech support and extremely good warrenty. If I didn't get my PNY 6800 GT for 300 back in July I would own a BFG.

It does make me feel better hearing your confidence in BFG.

It will be nice to have a reasonably priced player around. I hope they stay and are for real.

I got this card from a Best Buy last July since it was the first one I found in stock. BFG itself seems to be okay. The tech support is great and the warranty is supposed to be good, although nobody seems to be sure how their special heatsink compares to the standard one. I haven't heard anyone else complain about this connector issue though, so mine might just be a rare case.

If BFG offers the advance replacement option that some companies have then this would be much quicker; maybe I'll give them a call and ask about that.

I had to RMA 2 cards to BFG within 2 weeks, and i got no hassle or anything. The people i talked to were patient and very nice. When i RMA'ed them, i sent both out on the Friday of the week, and got them both back on the following Tuesday.

VERY good customer support.

Well, this is getting on my nerves. Happened again twice today, and the second time there wasn't even anyone at the computer. I'll call them up tomorrow morning and see how it goes. I am assembling a new system next weekend but am going to keep using this card, so I should probably get a properly working one for that.

I had a similar problem with my FX5900... turns out it wasn't the fault of the card, it was the molex connector... the female pins on the connector had been opened up by a previous molex connector from a cheap case fan that I had plugged into it. When I plugged that connector into the card, it didn't fit as tight as it should have. So I disconnected everything from power and used a safety pin to bend the pins back into their normal shape and it fit and worked fine after that.

I tried a bunch of different molex cables several months ago and it happens to some degree with all of them, although the one that came with the card is by far the worst. The one I'm using is the toughest connector in the case that stretches far enough (comes directly from the power supply). I'm not sure whether the more rigid cables on the Modstream power supply I am getting would make this better or worse.

A quick fix would be to just tape the thing in place, but that is kind of clumsy for long term usage.

I'm sorry, but I would consider Visiontek a cut rate producer WAY before BFG. I've owned a Visiontek card and I had to replace it twice. The BFG card I've had has been flawless.

What the hell...third time now. Lost the homework I was working on. :| I would call them up right now if it wasn't going wake up everyone else in the house.

I had a visiontek geforce 2 ultra that I used for about 4 yrs & it was still working without any problems other than I would get some stutter when I played freelancer. It was just time to update.
