6800 GT overclocking

I just grabbed a BFG 6800GT OC and wanted to get the most out of it. I know ATI Tool is good at finding the max settings for ATI cards. Is there anything similar for nvidia based cards? What isthe best approach to finding the max safe settings?

Download coolbits to add the overclocking tab to your card properties.

I know there is a test button to test your new oc speeds, I've used that and tested until it says the new speeds failed. Seems to work for me but I don't know if this is the norm to oc the gt cards.

The ATItool is great. I am not aware of anything like that for NVIDIA. But, I am new to NVIDIA.
What ATItool does is to heat up your card, like it is when you play a game, and decrease the overlclock rate automatically if there are artifacts.
The test button you are talking about does the test at the temperature the card is at. Theoritically, that would be very optimistic.

Use Rivatuner. ( www.guru3d.com ) In my opinion and many others it is the best tweaking/oc'ing freeware out there for both Nvidia and ATI! Best approach to finding out max oc is to dnld rivatuner> oc your memory in increments of 7 MHz and after each increase run 3dmark03 or 05. In 03 run it atleast through the 1st four tests and in 05 run it through the 3rd test. If you see no artifacts/whitespots/funky polygon errors then bump it up 7 more MHz and run tests again.(ESC will end the bench for you) When you do see artifacts/whitespots/polygons outta place then bump the mem speed back down 10 MHz. Then repeat same tests with your core clock increasing in 7 MHz increments again looking for artifacts/whitespots. I know this sounds like a slow process and it is, but better safe then sorry. My experience is that with oc'ing the memory 1st you get better performance and a better feel for what artifacts/whitespots/outta place polygons look like. If you are familiar with these benches (03 and 05) than you will readily see the graphical errors. I have a EVGA 6800GT with a NV5 Silencer and run stable @ 434/1150 stock being 350/1000 . I feel this a good oc and with GOOD case cooling you should get close to this. G-LUK
