6800 gt overclock question?

i have just started overclocking my evga 6800gt pci-e card and am trying to figure out why i cant seem to overclock to 400/1100. it keeps failing the internal test, however i can do 399/1099 and it runs perfect. is this a hardware or software test, like is it seeing that my amibient temp is too high or something and wont let it overclock or is it the card that is limiting it? just seems weird that i cant break into the ultra range.

ocing is never guaranteed. you just probably got a non-ocing card. just say you got an ultra spec card...i wont tell 🙂

haha yeah, just seems sort of wierd, but if the card is the case then so be it, but if anyone knows of this happening and it being a software thing, let me know!

That memory speed is by the DDR clock, I'm supposing. It should actually be 550mhz, if I'm not mistaken. 'Cause an actual memory speed of 1100mhz is unheard of.

oh sorry yeah that is the effective, yeah it is stock at 500 or 1000 effective but yeah 550 is what i am tryen to get

i used coolbits and rivatuner, both say the same thing when i try to test the settings

is there a better program or another way to test it, my room is kinda steamy right now, so would that be playing a factor in it, maybe it is not letting it overclock because it thinks temps are too high??? (i am relatively new to oc'ing, thanks for the help)

whoa wait a minute, i just got 405/1100....now i am a little confused??? can anyone explain this?

update: now i even got 418/1120

What are you using to test?

when you overclockthe card, it says you have to test the setting, using rivatuner, before you can apply the settings

That is not a true test. Sure, if it can't "pass" the setting and actually set the clock speed to what you chose, it "fails" that test. But, that's not a true test of whether your card can handle that clock speed.

Start up Doom3, Far Cry, or even loop 3dmark05 a buncha times. That's actual testing. If the computer freezes, reboots, shows odd artifacting on the screen, or anything else that doesn't seem normal, then the clock is too high.

And, yes, as others have said, overclocking is not a guarantee, but ignore the idiot that told you to shutup. You just posed a question for crying out loud. It's not like you're planning to RMA it because you can't hit ultra speeds.

hey thanks man, yeah i played around with the setting for a little while and so far i am at 405/1100 with no probs, when i have more time i may go further. thanks for the help!
