6800 GT heating issues

I have been running an Albatron 6800 GT for approximately one year now. I checked the temperature of the GPU and it is running at 72 degrees celsius. Does anyone have any advice as to how I can lower the temperature of the GPU? This is my case:

I am not sure how to get better airflow to the machine, the side fan has been taken off... Would it be a start to put it back in? The actual case is sitting inside a desk with a cpu tower so there is not much room on the sides of the case. Would putting the side case fan improve the airflow or is it time to invest in a new case? The heat of my cpu and mobo seems to be fine, there are just issues with the graphics card.

Any advice/comments would be appreciated.

the card shouldnt be running that high with or without the sidecase fan. rma it, but before that, try to get a replacement card and see if readings/agp bus aren't screwed up before doing the rma.

Welcome to the forums. RMA means to return the card.
If that is 72C under load like during a game, or about 6+ hours of being on in non-standby mode, then that temp is fine. If it is at 72C after just a few minutes of turning on your computer, and it was never that high before, something might have broke, like the fan. We need more information before we jump to any conclusions. The 6800 GT has a maximum temperature of ~120C anyways, so you are well under that and nothing will happen to your card.

It creeps to 72 after about 10 minutes of being on without doing much at all. I don't think the fan has broken but for the last few weeks it has been a lot louder than usual.

There's your problem right there, that system needs to breathe & stuffing it into a closed space is the worse thing you can do to a system.

Take it out of there & yes put a fan on the side of the case.

I have a case very similar to you & what dropped my temps a lot was to put a top blowhole with a 120mm fan.

more specifically means return merchandise authorization. you need to call up the vendor/manufacture for one of these rma codes. jumping up to 72c just being on idle for 6 hours is highly improbable, let alone heavy gaming (my card: 47idle/53load). op, louder than usual is commonly a bad thing, but probably because what budman just stated.

Hmmm, there is not much else I can do with the case in relation to where I put it. If I put a side fan in I will not be able to keep it in that space will I? Will a side fan and some cable ties fix the problem?

If I'm understanding your original post correctly, you have been using this video card for a year now.... you happened to decide to look at it's temperature and got a surprise ... Is this the only indication of a "problem" you have?

If your card was dangerously hot... for a year... it would be dead by now.

Bottom Line: If it ain't broke..... don't fix it

The only noticable issues are a slightly louder fan, and this temperature. I only checked the temp for the first time yesterday, nfi how long it has been running like this.

I've hit 70 before after playing FEAR, but I think it was an error? I know I've alt t abbed out of Doom 3 and to see l oad temps of only 56... Weird...

But yea 72 load is fine.
