6800 being dumb... Or just my whole computer?

I seem to be having some major issues here... Not sure if its just my video card, or something wrong the my whole setup. Please review my specs below before I describe my problem:

- p4 2.4 w/ HT (Asus p4s8x-x)
- 1024mb pc3200 (Corsair xms)
- 6800 nu w/ 128mb (eVGA)
- Santa Cruz soundcard (Turtle Beach)
- 350watt power supply (Enermax)
- 80gb and 60gb hdds (Maxtor)

- Windows XP Pro
- Directx 9.0c
- nvidia Forceware 65.62

My problem is this... I'm getting absolutely crappy fps in d3. Timedemo demo1 results:

800 x 600 w/ High settings (specular and AA are both off, everything else is on)

Test 1 (64mb AGP aperture w/ 8x) = 23.4 fps
Test 2 (128mb AGP aperture w/ 8x) = 23.3 fps
Test 3 (128mb AGP aperture w/ 4x) = 23.2 fps

Comparing my results to this page, I SHOULD be getting around 70-80 fps with the hardware/setup I have.

Notes:

- I noticed in timedemo and in-game that the greatest lag occurs when there is AI interaction. Whenever no AI is present the card works pretty nicely... 8-15 fps is approx what I'm getting when in a firefight.

- I tried the 61.77 driver and got similarily crappy results. So I figured I would try 65.62... However, 65.62 has shown little to no improvement.

- My AGP aperture setting does not affect performance (as you can see above).

- I disabled HT seeing if that would change anything... nope, still the same crappy fps.

- I tried the cvars (cachemegs, MinK)... nothing there either.

I dont know what the problem is... please help.

My first guess is that you have somehow enabled AA+AF or that something else is eating up your resources. you may want to check into this first and then reply back

If you have 3dmark, check if your Fill Rate (Single-Texturing) and (Multi-Texturing) to see if your GPU is working properly.

Make sure DirectX 9.0b or 9.0c is installed first of all.

Then check if you don't have old ATI or Nvidia drivers still saved on your system by running the program Driver Cleaner 3.2 . Make sure to run this program after you uninstall your current drivers but before you reinstall new ones (it's all detailed in the Driver Cleaner directions).

Also make sure, as others have said, that your system is not bogged down with spyware or adware or other malware.

Do you have the latest chipset/motherboard drivers installed, including AGP/GART drivers, etc?

If you've tried everything and it still gives that abysmal performance, then I'd go with a fresh system reformat. You should be getting WAY higher performance.

hit ctrl alt del and see what your memory usage and processor usage is.

Also do what jiffylube said below. Those are also good suggestions.

Is Vsync disabled? Are your framerates OK in other games compared to others with your hardware?

I don't want to hijack thread, but just tried 3dmark2003 and got 8766 combined. I think this is about right. Maybe you should run 3dmark and see what you score.

I have same frustration.

My system is:
P4 1.6
Asus P4S8X MB
512 MB 2700 Memory
XP Pro
DirectX 9.0c

Using my Asus GeForce GTS 2 Pro (32 mb), I get 9-12 fps in Unreal Tournament 2004. I have bought an ATI 9800 Pro 128 MB and no matter what settings I put it on, get same... 9-12 fps.

Did you figure out solution? Someone at local store told me the chipset used on the P4S8X were not very good with games and that it is the motherboard that is the bottleneck.

Any help appreciative.

I get a 3dmark score of 8940, and my cpu rating is 488, so I would say your cpu is being held back some how.

Still shouldn't be that low, my buddy has a 1.4Ghz w/512mb rdram and a GeForce 2 and gets at least 25-30 fps on ut2004 with 1024x768 low/medium settings

sounds like a driver issue to me guys, maybe a p4s8x driver conflict/update needs to be corrected

I have latest video drivers from nvidia. Too, have installed latest motherboard drivers, such as the SIS AGP 1.17 driver, from Asus. Only thing not up to date is the motherboard bios, which is 1004. Latest is 1005, but the fixes/changes listed for this bios don't seem to prevailent (that and don't have a floppy drive).

uninstall ur sound card drivers, enable onboard sound in bios, and take out that santa cruz, mite have problems. use medium quality, not high. the NU has 128megs of mem, although they did the HardOCP review on high and i bought the card thinking it could work on high, it lags. :( i blame hardocp. but anyway, put it on medium, then bench it. go into cfg and tweak it for quality, but it will still be compressed cuz the game says medium, mine looks VERY comparable to high, but its much easier for the 6800NU to use tweaked out medium.

xtra Q's,
u installed XP from scratch?
do u have one stick of 1024 ram? if not, take a stick out and bench, then switch and repeat. memtest86 also
specular should be ON.

btw, ur 3dmark cpu score is RETARDED. i betcha u are blaming hardware as a wrong thing, u probably have spyware and antivirus and or viruses in the background. start xp from scratch then build layers of protection.

I fixed the high quality lag by disabling fastwrites.

FWIW, when I first built my 3.4GHz HT w/ 6800U + DDR400 RAM on ASUS P4C800-E, it had some pretty slow scores. I used CPU-Z to look at the memory settings, PCMark04 to check on HyperThreading, and SiSoftware SANDRA to look at other BIOS configurations to see what I needed to tweak to get my PCMark04 and 3DMark03 scores up. Microsoft's "dxdiag" command-line utility also checks your GPU. Like the others said above - be sure your BIOS is flashed to the latest version and that BOTH HyperThreading is enable and the APCI (power setting) is enabled. Then check if PAT is enabled for memory. It dinged my CPU scores just a little bit, but my memory scores went up. Also make sure you are using the proper DIMM slots for your XMS RAM. Since you want a clean system to benchmark, I recommend you wipe your system clean, reinstall XP + SP2 + Video Driver + Audio Driver and that's all. Run the *Marks and SANDRA and keep tweaking. And if you have a voltmeter, make sure that the rail going to card has exactly 12V and 5V.

Just to make sure.....for everyone benchmarking doom 3, either run the demo multiple times and ignore the first few runs or call the console and use the "timedemo demo1 usecache" option. This "precaches" all the textures into ram (this is what the system is doing when it jumps temporarily, it is loading more textures into ram...by precaching, all lag gone :) ). Im going to clarify for everyone having problems with slight jumping during gameplay (opening a door or walking into a new room)...use these settings for quality
128mb vid ram- medium
256mb ram- high
512mb (nonexistent yet)-ultra
the game will run at a "higher then recommended" setting but will jump.

Also, 8900 is about right for your system. Your main bottleneck is your chipset and your p4. Other then that...everything looks normal. Hope that helps!
