I dont mean to hijack this thread but I'm thinking about doing the same thing BUT I currently have a 9800 256mb card. i kind of want ot try one of the new gen cards and have a max of about 300 bucks. If I were to upgrade to a 6800 NU would I get a decrease in performance? The old card would go to upgrade my other system which is currently running a GF3 Ti200 and sorely needs an update.

Just simply flashing your card's BIOS to an XT's will increase its performance ~10% - for free.

Sure it'd be faster - but only a "step-up" - not like going to a 6800-GT . . . in a few rare cases, the 9800xt actually is faster than the 6800 ;)
(i did say "rare) :p

You have a nice rig, $300 to spend (presumably), and you are hampering your gameplay with an old Radeon 9600... Get the 6800nu and you'll be able to play everything out beautifully at 10x7. From the looks of it, it appears that video cards are pretty damn expensive in the UK and I would imagine that the 6600GT might not be as good of a deal over there as it will be in the States. Not to mention that it might take longer to be released there. If you have the money and can find a card at the right price, get yourself a 6800nu. You will have yourself a really nice, balanced gaiming rig that should rock at 10x7.

The 6600GT will definately save you some money if you wait. It's more than adequate for Doom 3 and Far Cry at 1280x1024, which are the two most demanding games on the market right now.

The 6800NU costs $50-100 more than the 6600GT will, but is only marginally faster.
