All other things being equal, how much of a difference does 256mb make against 128mb at high resolutions like 1680x1050?

Unless there's a 128mb GT or a 256mb NU out there, there's a lot more of a difference between the two cards than just the amount of ram... the GT is about 50% faster than the NU, and costs about that much more than it.

how about any of you who have been successful at unlocking a 128mb 6800 and overclocking it?

Correct me if I'm wrong but there are no 256 MB 6800 (no letters).

The amount of RAM doesn't influence speed/FPS. It mainly allows you to load better textures. If you load the fancy textures into a card with too few memony then you'll see a sharp performance drop.
