6790 or GTX580? Performance to value?

You mean the 6970 right? 1 6970 is slightly under a GTX 580, but not much and the price difference is pretty huge. Go with the 6970, its almost a no brainer unless you aren't the slightest bit worried about money.

I am going with 2 6970s in crossfire, and it outperforms 2 GTX 580s on some games on certain resolutions. And I beg to differ that 2 6970s in crossfire better than 1 6990 in most games on most resolutions, especially if the 6970s you get are stock OCd.

You pay a premium for Nvidia, and you don't always get your moneys worth if you compare it with ATI. The 6990 is still the single best GPU and its cheaper than the GTX 590. Dunno why anyone would even buy a GTX 590 unless they just love Nvidia and hate ATI.

I'm pretty neutral, and I go with whoever wants to give me the better deal for my money, and most of the time it is ATI. If I can find a good Nvidia card on sale, I would buy it.

Is the consensus that the 2600K is absolutely useless for gaming ? I am waiting for socket 2011 SB-E chips, but was debating a SB in the interim.

The 2500K + MB is cheap in combo deals where I shop, the only thing putting me off is the need for a full OS reinstall.

Then again I don't know I would get any better gaming performance. Hard to find any Tri-SLI benches comparing an overclocked i7 920 to overclocked SB.

In your case there's also the tri-SLI aspect. X58 is better suited. Sandy Bridge doesn't have the pci-e lanes. X8-X4-X4 unless you go with an NF200 equipped board.

I'd sit pat if I had your system.

I agree with 3DVagabond, SB-E is the rig for you to get with tri-sli.


@OP: I would definitely go with a 6970 or gtx 570. At your resolution they are basically in a dead heat performance-wise, I would buy whichever one is cheaper in your neck of the woods.

Looking at around $500-$540 for a GTX 580, about $130 difference, and if you crossfire/sli then that doubles to $230 and Xfire 6970s compared to GTX 580s are neck and neck. If you want a stock OCd GTX 580 with better than stock looking you are looking close to $550 or almost $200 more than a comparable 6970. Its just not worth 200 extra bones for a video card that isn't substantially better. I don't even think the GTX 580 is 10% better, and even if it was it still wouldn't be worth $200 more. In games that actually use a lot of Vram, the 6970 should perform better.

That's comparing the most expensive 6970 on NewEgg (Seems to be a lot of OoS. Maybe something's coming soon? ). You can get 6970's starting at $299.99AR

Exactly. Not only is the 570 cheaper than the 6970, but it overclocks much better as well, plus it can do physx, and is considerably faster in tessellation.

Seems like a no brainer to me.

Right now in US, the GTX570 looks to be the better card, unless resolutions of 2560x1600 or higher are considered. You can either get a GTX570 for $275 with lifetime warranty and overclock it yourself, which makes it cheaper than the 6970.

OR

You can get a factory pre-overclocked GTX570 that is a hair slower than a GTX580 for $305; and it also comes with lifetime warranty. AMD has nothing to compete with that.

An overclocked GTX570 will also be faster than an HD6970 too. The 6970 barely scales with overclocking.

I agree with the recommendations for the 6970 or the 570. The 6970 has lower power consumption and support for eyefinity if those things matter to you. The 570 has better stereoscopic 3d and physx.
edit: I didn't realize the power consumption of the two cards was so close, so it's more of a toss up in that respect. http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/292?vs=306

Not even close once again. Nvidia has the better offering in the 570 and if you can splurge a little the 580 is a beast. Amd has nothing to compete with it except for sandwich cards which microstutter and dont overclock well.
