6700K or 5820K?

I have a 3770k 16gb 2133 ddr3, and a 780 classified. And my i7 is overclocked to 4.6. But the upgrade bug has bit me and i want to upgrade, i was sure i wanted a 6700k until I started looking around and found out i could build a x99 system for not much more. While i do more gaming than anything and i know the 6700k should do better in most games but i do some video editing and livestreams which the 2 extra cores and 4 threads would be nice. I would just like to get someones opinion on it, has anyone had both and whats a good overclock on the 5820k around 4.3-4.5? And can you run dual channel ddr4 in a x99 system right, i still might go 16gb of quad channel just depends. And i was gonna get a 980ti or another 780 but just got a 4k 60hz monitor and i dont think 3gb vrams enough. So im hoping one 1080 or 490x will do 4k better than last gen on a single card.

There's a chance that Directx12 will make these higher core count chips start to shine....

But why upgrade on a "chance"? In my opinion, (and trust me the damn upgrade bug bites me all the time too) There's no better time to wait than now.

The new FinFet node is almost upon us... so buying a Video card new right now is like lighting money on fire.

Why not put off until June? The dust will have settled and things will look a lot different. My strong feeling is that over investing right now will leave you with some extreme buyers remorse.

For what it's worth, my upgrade bug bit me bad. In a span of a few months, I went from a i5-2500K (Oc'd to 4.5ghz), to a i7-2700K (Oc'd to 4.6 GHz), and that literally made no difference. So then I gutted the machine and went 6-Core I&-3930K on a Rampage Extreme (Oc'd to 4.5GHz)..... Still felt unsatisfied, gutted it all again and I'm now running a 4790K (at 4.6GHz) on a Hero VII...

And you know what? After it all, I've learned two things: The pretty red led accent lights on the Asus Hero VII are cool and that that the 2500K was doing just fine. ;-)

3770K @ 4.6 isn't worth upgrading IMHO. If you really wanted to upgrade, I'd wait for Broadwell-E to hit. Shouldn't be too much longer.

Also, wait for a couple of months to upgrade your GPU as well, as AMD's and NVIDIA's new cards are right around the corner.

Basically...wait.

IMO, both the 6700k and 5820k do well now. You really can't go wrong with either. For gaming it's very close if you OC (sounds like you do now), but for editing the 5820K will be significantly faster.

Both will last many years. It is highly likely that towards the end of their life span, more cores will be used a lot more, giving extra life in the 5820k. Especially when DX12 promises to add a lot more multithreading support. The problem is, you get the upgrade bug before you need a new CPU.

You have no reason to upgrade now other than you want to upgrade, that means that how well they do in the future matters little to you. So weigh their value with today's applications and games.

You'd be best off not upgrading, but if you have to, the i7 6700k is likely your best bet.

If you are livestreaming whilst playing games, the extra cores would be more useful.

If you're livestreaming you should probably be using hardware encoding anyway.

iGigaflop: I surely understand the urge to upgrade. I had a 3770k rig and loved it. I ran my 3770k at 4.5 and it was solid.

As you can see from my sig I have an X99 platform and a Z97 platform.

With either the 6700k or the 5820k you need new DDR4 ram. Buy the fastest you can afford. The X99 platform has quad channel support so I would recommend 4x4 for 16Gigs unless you want to go higher.

I also echo the other comments about waiting to upgrade. In the next few months, Intel will release its Broadwell E chips for the X99 platform and Nvidia and AMD will release new gpus. If you really have the urge for more cores wait unitll the Broadwell E release. With careful OCing and cooling most 5820ks will fall into the 4.3 to 4.5 range but the 6700ks are clocking in the 4.5 to 4.8 range with decent cooling.

Do you think there will be a notable drop in price for the 6700k or 5820k once the new Broadwell E chips are released?

This.

When doing in-home streaming with Steam on my wife's old 3770k, it could not hold a playable FPS at 1080p with a GTX Titan, but my 3960x with Titan could do it just fine. Upgraded her to a 5820k and streaming is perfect now. Those 2 extra cores make a big difference when playing a game that only supports quad core so they can be spent on just encoding the stream. :D

Why not just use hardware encoding? Steam will use Quicksync or NVENC for in-home streaming. The bit rate can be quite high so the quality difference between hardware and software encoding isn't as impactful.

6700k has been slowly inching down in price, at least as far as microcenter deals go. but i don't expect big price movement on it.

maybe you find some stock clearing sales on HW-E. but, iirc, over the last 5 years or so, typically the release of a successor processor hasn't dropped the price of generally available previous processors.

Im selling my mb, ram and cpu and cooler to a good friend for $300 he's getting a hell of a deal. Still have a sapphire 7970ghz im trying to sell also, to bad i didnt sell it when it was worth 300-400 now im gonna ask $200 for it. But i went ahead and ordered the 5820k, while the 3770k is a great cpu and is still works great for all my needs i just like to upgrade and build new systems and ive wanted an x99 system for a long time and i wanted at least a 6 core and it was to expensive before and while 5820k is a great cpu its not 600 or 1000 dollars.

What mb and ram are you going to use?

What board are you going to get?

the machine WAS using steam to encode, so i assume it was using quicksync. it just wasn't playable at full FPS 1080p with the 3770k. i think it may have been one of the borderlands games.

i know quicksync rocks for encoding. just switching from sandy bridge to ivy bridge makes a glorious difference in x264 encoding.

at any rate, i don't pay for my hardware, so it was just easier to bring home a new cpu/mobo/ram for her and call it a day. :)

I have a 3770K at 4.6 also, and it has no problems pushing my 980ti's, Unless you just want all of the benefits of a new mobo/chipset, You'll probably regret building a whole new rig. I have a 1440p 120hz monitor, and it has no problems pushing 100+ in just about anything I throw at it that isn't GPU limited.

I had 780's in it prior to the 980ti's, and they had VRAM issues at 1440p. I couldn't use ultra textures on SoM without hitching.

Was thinking of going with an asus x99 pro because it matches my case and i wanted a white motherboard. Ive had two msi boards and one gigabyte board and never had a problem out of either one. Anyone have and recommendations the cheaper the better and it doesnt have to be white. And not sure about a cooler water or air but ive never had water and was wondering if the pump would get on my nerves. Ive got a big case its a cm storm stryker so i have room for a decent radiator.

I generally prefer ASRock these days, unless ASUS is on a fire sale, so IMO I'd get something cheaper & just as reliable from them ~ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...$$$$$$$;13-157-567:$$$$$$$;13-157-598:$$$$$$$
