6700k, GTX 1080, 1440p, VR and General Gaming Build

I'll be gaming almost exclusively with this build. I prefer RTS, RPG, Simulations, and some low spec indie games. I want to be able to play Star Citizen, the next generation of Total War Games, the next Bethesda and CD Projekt Red RPGs, and VR.
I plan to buy a 25"-27" 1440p monitor to go with it. I'll pickup a VR headset later once a wider variety of complete VR games come out.
Budget is ~$1500
I already own the storage I will put in it.
Located: USA, UT, SLC
I intend to OC as much as is reasonable (at least eventually).
I have a Win10 disk, but I'll probably need a new license.

I'll build either now, or wait 6 months to a year for major VR releases, and more solid info on future DX12 and other software system reqs come out. I'm currently playing RimWorld and Pulsar Lost Colony, so I'm not in some rush to build now so I can play a particular game, BUT, I am currently rocking a Q9450, HD 7850 build lol, so I'll need to upgrade to play newer AAA, and even ordinary releases, pretty soon.

I'm looking at something like this:

I already have the storage, like I said, and I'm flexible on the case, PSU, RAM (although I want 16GB), and MOBO (so long as it's Z170). I'm not sure if the 6700k will be a big advantage with it's HT over the 6600k, but I think the extra 100 bucks is worth it in case DX12 or whatever else in the gaming world starts taking advantage of HT in the next 5 years. I dunno though.

Let me know what you think.

Looks fine to me. But what storage device do you already have? I hope it's not an HDD from your current build. If it is, then I advise getting a reasonable size SSD and a 2 TB HDD. Games do take up a good deal of space these days.

it's a 500gb 850 EVO SSD that I upgraded my old build with very recently.
you think I should grab an extra 2TB HDD though?

For games yes. I have two 1 TB SSDs and one is half full of data and the other is half full of games. 500 GB of storage just doesn't last very long these days.

+1 for more storage. Right now I have like a half dozen games that take up over 30GB of space (witcher3 is like 30, WoW is 55? Doom is up there, Star citizen...). Just get a 2-4TB platter and call it good.

If you're looking for a 1440p gsync monitor, i highly recommend the Acer XB271HU. Have had it for a few months now, tied to a 970GTX and it's great.

Thanks for all the replies

Do you have any strong opinions on which z170 board to get? Even if I narrow it down to z170, atx, lga1151, 4star plus reviews, around $150, etc...there's still like 20 options lol.

I've been looking at:
Asus Z170-A
asus z170 pro gaming
Gigabyte Gaming 3 or gaming 5
MSI z170A krait
some asrock fatality something or other
and others

I just have the asus z170-A on there because it seems to have the most positive reviews, but I think that's also due to it being around awhile? Also, does killer vs intel nic matter? Should I get a sound card? Which motherboard has good sound already?

it's an overwhelming number and they all seem to have almost the same stats

I'm looking for:
strong OC for CPU and RAM
good reliability
at least 2xPCIE x16 (maybe sli later?)
at least 2x 6gb/s sata
at least one m.2 (just in case)
whatever the latest usb is, 3.0 or 3.1
sturdy enough to take a big cpu cooler
good onboard sound
good onboard lan if that's reasonable\
whatever else you think is important

thanks!

@Schweet Z170 Pro Gaming has SupremeFX sound (basically a buffed up ALC1150), other than that it's more or less a Z170-A in red/black guise. Great board overall and fits all your requirements.

Just my opinion, but it may be worth going with a 1070 now and upgrading when you do go VR or the games you are anticipating come out. Save $200, sell the 1070 for $200(?) and pick up something that will be better at VR.

Nice case choice. I considered that NZXT case but ended up going with the Phanteks 400p
