I'm looking at putting together an upgrade to my current Sandy bridge build and would be grateful for some opinions from fellow forum members,

1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.
Gaming, encoding Blurays to x264 for Plex/KODI

2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread.
Approx £700

3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.
UK, though happy to purchase from overseas if its more economical

4. IF you're buying parts OUTSIDE the US, please post a link to the vendor you'll be buying from.
www.ebuyer.com
www.overclockers.co.uk/
www.amazon.co.uk

I'd be happy just for suggestions on parts then I can scour the internet for the best price/warranty/delivery options

5. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc.
No preference

6. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.
just need MoBo, CPU, Memory and also considering upgrading to a faster SSD boot drive.

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.
Overclock

8. What resolution, not monitor size, will you be using?
1440p

9. WHEN do you plan to build it?
Next 30 days

10. Do you need to purchase any software to go with the system, such as Windows or Blu Ray playback software?
Nope.

Here is what I have put together, I hope you can recommend some options for either saving money or better performing parts.

Intel Core i7 6700K 4.00GHz Socket 1151 OEM Processor £275

ASRock Z170 Extreme6+ Socket 1151 DVI-D HDMi DisplayPort 7.1 CH HD Audio ATX Motherboard £176

Samsung 950 PRO 256GB M.2 SSD £138

Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB 2x8GB 3000MHz DDR4 C15 Red Memory Kit £62

Total £651

Thanks

Unless you NEED the bandwidth of the 950 pro the 850 Evo will give you just as good experience for desktop use and gaming use and you can get a 500GB for around £110.

Also unless you need the features of the Extreme6+ a cheaper motherboard like the ASUS Z170-A would probably be fine.

Also remember you will need a CPU cooler unless you already have one you can use.

Looks good to me. The next step would be to step up to a hex-core:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

There are new LGA2011 processors coming very soon, which could make the 5820k cheaper - or not.

Thanks, there seems to be a great selection of Z170 motherboards available. I certainly do not need every bell and whistle, just a reasonable overclock and some of the new features like M.2 and USB 3. The ASUS Z170-A seems a good deal.

Good info, I had not realised the x99 platform was priced so close to the Z170.

I did end up going the x99 route in the end, maybe with the BD-E news is influencing prices!

I have managed a new boxed 5820K for £270 and a MSI X99A SLI PLUS Motherboard for £129.

Just need to find some RAM and a good air cooler (nh-d15?) and I should be good to go

Sounds like a nice setup. (I would know seeing as mine is fairly similar :p)

The NH-D15 is great if your case has the space for it. One of the best air coolers available.

Also, keep in mind X99 is quad channel memory so you will need 4x4GB(16GB), 4x8GB(32GB), or 4x16GB(64GB).

My recommendation would be ~3000MHz 4x4GB. But slower RAM is acceptable if price starts becoming a factor for you.

Is the 3000Mhz going to be a problem overclocking? My understanding is that over 2666Mhz the bclk will up to 125mhz. I can reduce the Multiplier on the CPU but can I also reduce the multi on the other buses (DMI and PCI-E etc.) or will impeed my overclock?

Thanks

I personally have 3200MHz RAM stable at 100 bclk and 44 multiplier on the cores.
The only reason to switch to 125bclk is if you have stability problems, I haven't so I don't see a reason to start messing with buses.
