Hello everyone? first time I post on anandtech
yes... Just another "I need a new video card" thread
I was wondering...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814131481

or

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102950

Notes:
-My system is an encoding workstation, FX 8320, ATI 5450, Asrock 970 extreme3, 450W PSU.

-I want to replace the video card for something more adecuate for casual gaming.

-3D will be off most of the time, I do every editing and econding in 2D.

-I'm in a sub 100 price range, very tight budget

-I don't do overclocking, at all. I'm not an overclocker.

-19" monitor 1440x900. I wish I could play at that resolution. I Don't need AA or filters, I pretty much don't think I'm reaching those with such a budget.

-I do mind noise... it has to be silent, or at least silent on idle. And also the system is 16 hours on, sometimes more.

-NVIDIA is welcome, but which one would match the ones in the link?

Thank you in advance for your precious time.
Have a nice Year End!
If you drink, don't drive :)

Agree, 7750, or better yet, a 7770 will be dramatically better than a 6670 for what you're looking for.

Used is also a good option if you buy from a reputable member. GTX460, HD5850, lots of good stuff out there for cheap, but you need a little more PSU to run cards like that. They will certainly make noise while gaming, but generally if you have the volume turned up to a reasonable level, you won't hear the noise, and idle/windows clocks are pretty low and fan noise is minimal/unnoticable.

So, 7750 < 7770 < used (5850/etc). All good options. Even the 6670 isn't terrible, but The 7770 is massively faster and what I consider about the lowest I'd want to mess about with recent games in. I have one on my HTPC, and it handles things fairly well at 1080p with some reduced settings. If it tells you anything though, I do 95% of my gaming on my actual gaming rig w/670FTW. But the GF has no complaints about her Skyrim adventures with the 7770.

I don't really think nvidia has a compelling part for you, so yes, the amd choices are the correct ones. If you're gaming, I would just get the one that benches best and is still in your price range. (That is likely the highest end 7xxx card that you can afford).

Good point.

Also, OP .. if you can sell some old junk you don't need on ebay or something, going up to the 7850 is a gigantic leap, I mean huuuuuuuge, and it's still in the $150AR range if you're careful (watch hot deals, a 2GB 7850 came through along with several others at 150AR).

I know money is tight, but imho the leap between 77xx and 78xx is truly worth it. It's a much bigger leap than between 78xx and 79xx. Of course 79xx is better, but not as much as the leap between the 77s and 78s.

Nothing wrong with going with a 7770 though. I'm just saying you may have some old crap collecting dust that may be worth some quick cash on Ebay. You never know. I had an old Mac 23" Cinema Display that died on me, I looked at the cost of repair, then looked how much the power supplies and casing were selling for on Ebay. Ended up getting over $200 for the parts alone, silly to bother repairing it when new 23" Asus IPS monitors are under $250 with much better quality (compared to 2005 Mac monitor, haha).

7750 supposedly uses DDR5 at 4.5GHz, anything lower than that shouldn't be called 7750,
the standard 7750 is as fast as a 5770(6770), so it's clearly better than a 6670 DDR5, but the DDR3 version should be much closer to the 6670 DDR5, maybe even slower in some games...

with this money, you should go with a 7750 DDR5 or some older/used card like the GTX 460, 5850 (if you don't care much about using 2x+ the power)...
