6600GT vs X800XL

I'm currently running a 6600GT on a CRT max at 1280x1024. It is fine now but i'm planning to get the Dell 2001 or 2005 LCD. I think the 6600GT will have problem running smoothly at those resolution. I don't want to go the SLI route because of cost, bugs, noise and heat issues, and also not all games can take advantage of SLI.

with X800XL becomes available for $300, is it the best option for me to sell my 6600GT and get a X800XL? I want to keep my cost under $350.

Yes, provided that you can actually find a x800xl for $300. If you can, nothing else can beat it for the money.

Backordered,
I've heard people say X800Xl are available in CUSA, MC and Fry's at MSRP. So if you can get one of those, then yes, the switch is worth it. Otherwise I would't pay 350+ for an X800XL when I already have a 6600GT in my system.

Thanks for the replies!

Just went to Fry's and saw several X800XL for $299 in stock!!! Immediately picked one up. $272 would've been nice but i don't wanna wait. Now I got 16 pipes, 256bit memory with 256MB DDR3 for $100 extra, though I'll have to sell my 6600GT for a loss. Can't wait to test it tonite and see how much I gain in 3DMark05. 🙂

Look at it this way, sell your 6600GT and take what, $100-$150 off the price of the 800XL? I want that X800XT AIW bad, but it's like $480...if I sell my 9800PRO I can take almost $150 off the top right there 🙂

Congrats on your new card 🙂 That's an unexpected move from ATI, though it's sad that these days we consider delivering the product at MSRP a special thing.

I heard you. that goes for the NF4 boards as well. I remember the days i never buy computer products at MSRP. I still can't understand why the demand for $400 graphic cards is so great. it's not like buying a BMW M3... or is it?

Because early adopting hardware geek whores are more than willing to shell out that kinda cash so they can get a 1% boost in their favorite synthetic benchmark thus elongating their e-penis.

Or something like that...

The X800XL is obviously the much faster card of those two, but it costs 50% more?

BTW-Mooncancook- you might want to look into PSUs while you're at it? Yours rang a bell with me, so I Googled it and:

the Aspire AS500W falls short where it matters: performance. The Aspire AS500W has its good features, but nothing can out-weigh unstable and unsafe voltages. I would not trust this power-supply in my system; I hope you would choose the same.

50%? Best price for the 6600GT I found was for $187. Price of backordered 800XL is $272 = only 30% difference by my math. Even if you don't want to wait, you can go with the full $299 MSRP card (in stock CUSA) and the difference is only 37%. For 100% more pipes.

(272 - 187) / 187 = 45.4% more expensive

(299 - 187) / 187 = 59.8% more expensive

So 50% is a good round figure.

Whoops! That's what I get trying to run numbers in my head. Used to actually be able to do it before college. Now I can't add/subtract without a calculator.

yes you are right. I am actually looking at some modular PSU with 24-pin plug. man, that's gonna cost another $100. now screw my original budget!

Ok I ran 3Dmark05 last night and here's the result. Everything stock and default.

Leadtek 6600GT ........ 3264
ATI X800XL ............... 4674

Summary: Basically a 50% more in cost for a 40% gain in performance, which is really good. It's not quite 1:1 but it's close enough for me to justify. only if X800XL would' came out couple weeks earlier then i wouldn't have to sell my 6600GT at a loss...

The stock X800XL turbine fan is not loud, but still too noisy for me, so I took the Zalman VF700 from my 6600GT and installed it on X800. Now it is whisper quiet 🙂
