Hi guys, just looking for your opinions on this.

Building a budget system for a friend, and the best video card he can stretch to is either a 6600GT 256 or an X1600Pro 256.

Now, I don't have much experience with either as I usually go for high-end cards, but which would be the better choice?

Thanks for your time!

I believe the x1600pro is generally faster, but I would really just pick which ever is cheaper.

the 7600gt is faster than both of those for the same price roughly. Out of those two however, the x1600pro has the slight advantage, especially the 512mb model.

Looking at a few benchmarks, it looks like the choice really depends on which type of games your friend wants to play.

Here are some basic performance specs to show the difference in the two cards:
(note that the specs on the 6600GT are for the 128MB version, so performance on the 256MB version should be a bit higher in games that use higher resolution/larger textures, assuming the same type of RAM/speed on both cards).

6600GT 128MB:
Memory Bandwidth: 16 GB/sec
Shader Operations: 4000 Operations/sec
Pixel Fill Rate: 2000 MPixels/sec
Texture Fill Rate: 4000 MTexels/sec
Vertex Operations: 375 MVertices/sec

X1600 Pro:
Memory Bandwidth: 12.48 GB/sec
Shader Operations: 6000 Operations/sec
Pixel Fill Rate: 2000 MPixels/sec
Texture Fill Rate: 2000 MTexels/sec
Vertex Operations: 625 MVertices/sec

The 7600gt is about $50 more expensive. You might be thinking about the 7600gs.

I doubt the 512mb version of the X1600pro is any better than the 256 version, or even the 128 version. The X800XL, which is a faster card, couldn't utilize the extra memory.

7600GT at those prices, though, is a definite no brainer. It's a great card.

I'd say get a 7600GT if the budget allows, if not then a 7600GS would be better than either a 6600GT or X1600 Pro.

BTW, a 7300GT performs about the same as a 6600GT these days

Here in Canada the X1600 Pro's and the 7600GS's are about the same price but 7600GS's win most benchmark wars I've googled. The 7600 GT's are $50->$150 more than both those cards depending on model/manufacturer/features.

** Edit: I'm talking AGP models of each...

X1600 pro is abit faster. But the old 6600GT isnt bad either.

But i suggest the X1600pro if he doesnt have any other choices.

Thanks for all your help guys. I think I'll make him cough up some more dough and get a 7600GT. It makes the most sense to me.

Good choice, but if he won't budge, still go with the 7600 GS.
