Like the summary says. I have a 9700Pro 128 and am considering upgrading to a 6600GT AGP. I'll be running this on the rig named "Kassidy" in my sig link, but if you don't want to click, specs are

Barton 2500+ @ 2800+
MSI K7N2 Delta2 Platinum
1gb (2x512. DC) Buffalo B-line PC2700
Topower(or Powmax, can never remember) 500W PSU (Can get specific line ratings later if needed)

I mostly play well, everything except massmogs, RPGs in general and sports games. I'm looking for good FPS at either 1600x1200 w/noAA/AF or similar frames at 1024 with 4xAA and 8-16xAF. Would the 6600GT give me this, or should I save up for a 6800GT? Or should I upgrade something else entirely, mobo, CPU?

Thanks for reading.

You mean Leadtek?

And thanks for the advice, I'm running a Radeon 9000 Pro that's dying...so will spend the $400 AUD to get a 6600GT :)

6600GT will be a good choice for upgrade, if 60% performance boost is OK for price difference. To my mind GeForce 6800 will be better while using AA.

yes leadtek extreme has the better memory
i got a 9400 in 3dmark 03 on mine and its a xfx card using a stock heatsink.
here is the best one

but thats pci-e and i think your looking for agp .
so if your going agp then i think they are all pretty close to the same.
packs a good punch for the price.

I really don't think the 6600GT is 60% faster than a 9700Pro (it's generally only 15-30% faster than a 9800Pro, which itself is only ~10% faster than the 9700Pro). It might be 60% faster at Doom3, but that's about it. It's definitely a step up, but I'm not sure I'd pay more than $50 or so (net) for that sort of upgrade, myself...

Leadtek, not Leadtech :)
I hear quite good things about BFG and eVGA, too, but yes, Leadtek is great.

I don't even think my 6800standard is all that much of an upgrade from my AIW9700pro to be honest. I'd think you'd want 6800GT or better for a decent performance jump and a platform change might be a better bet in the long run.

I have a 9700pro, and 2500 Barton too. Im gonna wait until later this summer and upgrade the whole machine to a new A64 setup along with whatever PCIe vid card is high-mid level at that time. Give the nF4 and PCIe a bit more time to mature.

Ditto. 9700Pro to 6600GT upgrade wouldn't be worth the money in my opinion. The least I would go for would be a 6800GT or X800XL/X800 Pro.

If you don't mind selling your 9700pro for a measly $120 or so. If it was an OC'd 9800pro I would say, no, but a good 256mb 6600GT will best either card, and in some apps only because it has 256mb ram.

The words "cost-efficient" and video cards don't mix.

Thanks for the help, people.

Killrose, I'm not really the sort who actually lets go of old hardware, I just let it keep piling and piling and piling... :D. The 128mb AGP 6600GT is only ~$215. A 256mb 6600GT is a good idea, but it'd end up a $900 upgrade, because I'd need a new mobo, new CPU and new ram as well as the PCI-E vidcard, because I haven't seen a 256MB 6600GT in AGP trim.

I'm thinking now, that I'm just gonna stick with what I got till I can afford to upgrade everything in one fell swoop. A64, NF4, 6800GT here I come! :D
